Benedict wins title in Mason City
MASON CITY — Mariaha Benedict claimed another tournament championship on Saturday, winning the Upper Iowa Invitational.
Benedict (39-5) went 4-0 on the day with two falls, a major decision and a medical forfeit.
She earned a win over Waverly-Shell Rock’s Lilly Stough in the 135 pound final.
“Mariaha looked really good,” Koenig said. “She got some good wins to reach the finals.”
Freshman Brooklyn Nelson (110) placed fourth, winning two matches. Nelson beat regional opponent Macy Tiedt of Waverly-Shell Rock 19-8 in the consolation semifinals.
“Brooklyn won her first match and then lost a tough one,” Koenig said. “She bounced back with a win over a regional foe. In her final match she lost to another regional opponent.
“Now we have to get ready for regionals. She’ll probably come out as the three seed, and will have a very tough bracket.”
Addie Mikesell placed seventh at 235 pounds. Mikesell beat Charles City’s Vivian Soifer by fall in 1:19 in the seventh place match.
“That was big for Addie to go out and get the fall to finish seventh,” Koenig said. “She has been growing and should be happy with her progression.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they travel to Mason City for a Class 2A regional meet.
