Big night for Dodgers
DES MOINES — For the second time this season, the Fort Dodge girls had no trouble with Des Moines East, picking up a 69-15 victory here Tuesday night.
Coming off a tough loss to 10th-ranked (Class 3A) Algona on the road Monday, the Dodgers showed no signs of fatigue, racing out to an 18-6 lead on the Scarlets.
LJ Maehl scored 30 points with 21 rebounds to lead the way, giving her 59 in two games vs. Des Moines East this season.
Dakota Pommer added 12 points with Grace Nichols and Janelle Derrig each scoring eight. Brooklyn Pommer, Charlotte Breeser and Malay Hollins all scored twice and Ellie Doster had one.
“I thought everyone played a solid game,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “We did a nice job of causing 25 turnovers and converting those on the other end.
“We needed a win to get some confidence back.”
Just 11 days ago, Fort Dodge (5-7 overall) claimed a 91-12 decision over Des Moines East (1-11). Since that performance, though, the Dodgers dropped four straight.
The Dodgers raced out to an 18-6 lead after one, taking a 27-point cushion into the break. Maehl had 18 points in the first half and Dakota Pommer scored 10.
“We got some good minutes out of our starters,” Messerly said. “They were able to move the ball well and find a rhythm out there on the floor.”
East came into the game having earned its first victory of the season this past Friday night with a 34-32 triumph over Des Moines North.
Fort Dodge closes out a three-game week on Thursday when they host Des Moines Hoover. The contest was originally scheduled for Friday before being moved up a night.
