BUSY WEEKEND

A long and impactful two days left St. Edmond head wrestling coach Kaden McClintock just trying to take it all in here Saturday evening.

The first-year Gael head coach helped host a youth tournament inside the SEHS gym on Friday night before doing the same with his high school team some 12 hours later.

Overall, McClintock enjoyed what he saw at the Vinnie Harvey Youth Tournament and St. Edmond Duals.

“It has been a real busy last few days but I am just super happy with it all,” McClintock said. “Starting Friday with the Vinnie Harvey Tournament, our numbers just continue to improve each year that we have it. I am also so thankful for all of the volunteers and help we receive to put that and the duals on because they make it all come together.”

West Hancock once again was crowned team champion at the duals with AGWSR finishing second. Southeast Valley was third followed by the Fort Dodge JV and the Gaels. The “championship match” took place in the opening round, as West Hancock rolled AGWSR, 60-15.

The Eagles also took care of Southeast Valley (54-20), Fort Dodge JV (71-6) and St. Edmond (66-12).

St. Edmond had just four wrestlers competing on the day, but the quartet finished with a combined record of 12-3 with nine pins and a technical fall.

Matthew Crimmins, a freshman, kick-started his home tournament run with four wins, scoring bons points in all four. Crimmins had three pins and a technical fall, including a 36-pin at 132 pounds.

His other two falls came in 68 seconds and 3:13, while his technical fall ended by a score of 15-0.

Senior Sam Myer matched Crimmins, going 4-0 with three falls in his final appearance at the duals. The 138-pounder had a 22-second pin with the other two coming in 2:27 and 2:44.

Adam Walker, also a senior, had a 3-1 day at heavyweight, netting himself three falls. One of those came in just 22 seconds to match Myer for the fastest by a Gael, with the other two coming in 68 seconds and 78 seconds.

Freshman Owen Rutherford went 1-2 on the day at 106 pounds.

“From a wrestling standpoint, just very, very happy with the effort by the guys on Saturday,” McClintock said. “We worked on a few things in practice Friday that I saw (Saturday) and they did a tremendous job bouncing back from Thursday at Webster City.

“It was a huge day for Matthew and Sam both going 4-0, and I really think Adam could have been 4-0, but we’ll get him there.”

Wyatt Blair was 4-0 with two falls and a technical fall while Colton Haug was also 4-0 with a pin to lead Southeast Valley. Oliver Riehl earned three wins including two falls and Kyle Eastman had three victories with a pin.

Evan Kuhn, Keelan Wellman, Colin Johnson, Brodey Laughman and Cooper Spece each won twice while Caden Milham and Allan Summers both had a win.

Grant Hurtt finished 3-1 for the Dodgers while Brock Trexler was 2-0. Noah Essman, Cael Adams and Coy Nichols each won twice, with Oseas Lopez, Keaton Hawkins, Kadince Kisler, Brexton Hines, Fernando Ortega, Alex Jensen and John Phan all picking up a victory.

St. Edmond returns to action on Tuesday when they host Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Don Bosco and Forest City for Senior Night. Don Bosco is one of the top programs in the state and a perennial Class 1A championship contender.

“The AD at Don Bosco reached out to (St. Edmond’s) David Flattery before the season and noticed we had a dual and they were open,” McClintock said. “They asked if they could come over and we gladly said yes. It’s something I’d like to keep on the schedule as we bring our numbers up and I hope we can pack the gym to make it a memorable night.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
