Tritons blister NIACC to end slide
The Iowa Central men used a big second half to run past North Iowa Area Community College here Wednesday night, 95-76.
With the win, the Tritons (9-7 overall, 3-4 in the ICCAC) snapped a four-game losing skid, prevailing for the first time since Dec. 4 when they downed second-ranked Kirkwood on the road.
Jordan Cain led four players in double figures for Iowa Central with 21 as Daviyon Gaston added 14. Jalen Wynter had 12 and Aleix Sempere Serrano chipped in 10.
“We had a strong night on offense,” ICCC head coach Ryan Kirsch said. “We were shooting really quick.
“There were a lot of openings our guys saw, which isn’t always the best thing in the world, but they were going in.”
Iowa Central led by 12 at the break before outscoring the Trojans (11-5, 4-3) over the final 20 minutes by a 49-42 count. Both squads received votes in the latest NJCAA national Div. II rankings, which features three ICCAC programs in the Top 10 and four in the Top 25.
NIACC was paced by Cameron Reigard, who had 15 off the bench on five made 3-pointers. Zion Wright scored 14 and Adam Hackett had 12.
“The thing that is still hurting us is we have to get these field goal percentages down by our opponents,” Kirsch said. “Cooper Randall did a good job defending. Our plan was to try and take Omarion Roberts away and we were able to hold him down.”
Thanks in large part to 16 made 3-pointers, Iowa Central was able to shoot 58 percent from the field with just 10 turnovers. Cain also had four steals.
Vice Grbic pulled down five rebounds with two steals.
Nine of those 16 made triples came in the first half, as Iowa Central would lead throughout. They also scored 22 points off 15 NIACC turnovers, helping them overcome 40 points scored by the Trojans inside the paint.
The Tritons return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Norfolk, Neb. to face Northeast.
