Constable wins title in Ames
AMES — Joe Constable continued his strong season here Saturday, capturing the heavyweight division title at the Jack Mendenhall Invitational.
Constable was one of four Fort Dodge wrestlers to place, as Damien Yeoman was third with both Rylee Brown and Jesse Egli finishing fourth.
Indianola walked away with team honors over Bettendorf and Waverly-Shell Rock. The Dodgers placed 11th ahead of Spencer, Boone, Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Perry.
Constable earned a fall, a major decision and two decisions, including a 5-4 victory over Indianola’s Xander Overton in the finals. He also claimed a 2-1 decision in the semi vs. Anthony Keys from Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
“Joe wrestled really well coming in as the third seed,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “He was in a tough bracket. He beat the 10th-ranked kid in the state, who knocked off No. 4 in the semifinals.
“It was a really positive weekend for him.”
Yeoman earned bronze at 106 pounds, going 4-1 on the day. That included a technical fall in the third place match vs. Bettendorf’s Hudson Fleming.
Brown went 3-2 at 157 pounds, earning a fall and two technical falls, while Egli was 4-2 at 175 with a 44-second pin, a technical fall and two major decisions.
“Damien, Rylee and Jesse were in tough brackets in a tough tournament,” Thompson said. “Rylee got beat in the semifinals by a state champion. Jesse lost to the same kid twice.”
Amari McCaleb had a win for the Dodgers at 138 pounds.
“As a team we have to have the growth mindset,” Thompson said. “We have so many young guys and so many injuries right now and with that we are lacking leadership with our veterans on the sidelines.”
The Dodgers will head back to Ames in their next outing with a dual against the Little Cyclones on Thursday.
