After stunning second-ranked Kirkwood last month in Cedar Rapids, the Iowa Central men were looking to complete the season sweep on their home floor during ‘Jam the Gym’ night here on Wednesday.

Instead, the Eagles gained a matter of revenge, posting a 71-64 victory to send the Tritons to a third consecutive loss.

Traijan Sain had 22 and Tate Petersen 17 to lead Kirkwood (20-2 overall, 9-2 in the ICCAC), as they were a combined 30-for-33 from the free throw line.

For the Tritons (11-10, 5-7), Jalen Wynter led four players in double figures with 15 points.

Irakli Akhalaia added 14 points, Daviyon Gaston had 13 and CJ Mitchell 10 for the Tritons.

Iowa Central attempted just nine shots from the charity stripe on the night.

Back in December versus Kirkwood, the Tritons posted an 83-62 victory, jumping out to a 42-22 lead. They hit 13 three-pointers, including seven from Wynter in that game while holding the Eagles to 18 percent from deep.

Wynter helped spark a second-half rally, knocking down four of his five 3-pointers, finishing with 12 points. Gaston had 11 of his 13 during that half.

Sain and Petersen did all they could to counter that one-two punch, scoring a combined 25 while going 12-for-12 at the free throw line. Kirkwood was 16 of 17 there in the final 20 minutes.

In the first meeting between the two, Sain had four points and Petersen just three as the pair went a combined 3-for-12 from the field. They were 9-for-12 on Wednesday, and made all five of their 3-point attempts.

Mitchell had five rebounds and Terrius Walker four while Mitchell and Cain both had two steals.

Iowa Central heads to Creston on Saturday to face Southwestern and is at Boone to meet Des Moines Area next Wednesday. They return to Hodges Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 8 to host Iowa Western.
