FDSH wrestling team takes care of Bobcats on the road
MARSHALLTOWN — After earning career win No. 300 here on Thursday, Fort Dodge head Bobby Thompson didn’t want to talk much about the achievement.
Thompson was too focused on his team and what they can still do better.
The Dodgers (7-4 overall) defeated Marshalltown, 45-27, before dropping a 50-27 decision to second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock.
Defending state champion and top-rated 144-pounder Koy Davidson (25-1) picked up a technical fall and fall last night. The senior has loved working with Thompson in his four seasons as a Dodger.
“Coach Thompson has been nothing but the best for me throughout my high school career,” Davidson said. “He’s one of the best motivators, and always boosts my confidence when he knows I need it.
“His speeches before practices get everyone going, lighting a fire in everyone to do their best.
“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else other than Fort Dodge under Coach Thompson.”
Two-time state champion Dreshaun Ross (7-0) just returned to the mat last week and picked up a pair of falls in Thursday’s triangular. Ross now has 98 career victories.
Through his three years with Thompson, Ross has built a lasting bond.
“He’s meant a lot to me, being my coach the past three years. I wouldn’t want it any different,” Ross said. “Outside of the wrestling aspect, he’s an amazing guy that would do anything for us, no matter what. I’m grateful for that, because some people don’t get that kind of opportunity. I can’t recall a time where we weren’t fed or had everything we need…he’s right there on it.
“I’m happy Coach Thompson got his 300th win, and glad to be able to contribute to it the last three years.”
Thompson was briefly reflective before getting to the specifics of Thursday’s performance.
“It means a lot to me to be a Dodger,” Thompson said. “I was born and raised in Red and Black. That’s what we try to get these guys to buy into when they put on the Fort Dodge singlet.
“Wins come and go, but looking out for these kids and making sure they have the best experience as Dodgers is what’s most important to me.”
In the dual against Marshalltown, the Dodgers prevailed in nine matches, earning bonus points in seven wins.
“We didn’t wrestle the best and we still have some things to work on, obviously,” Thompson said. “We didn’t perform with enough consistency. Marshalltown gave us a fight, and we were sloppy overall.
“Against Waverly we were a little apprehensive (as the underdog) and they took advantage. We have to go out and compete for the full six minutes of every match.”
Senior Hunter Richardson earned two falls, pinning Marshalltown’s Kager Kremer in 3:23 at 150 pounds. He also stuck Waverly-Shell Rock’s Brayden NcNeal in 3:15.
“That was huge for Hunter (Richardson),” Thompson said. “A big effort from a senior on the road.
“He’s a perfect example of being through the program for four years and earning that varsity spot.”
Freshman Damien Yeoman recorded a fall and a tech fall at 106 pounds. He pinned Go-Hawk Ryker Ebenhart in 3:26. Against Marshalltown, Yeoman earned an 18-2 tech fall.
Sixth-ranked (IAwrestle) Joe Constable was 2-0 at 285 pounds for the Dodgers. In the Go-Hawk dual, Constable topped Mason Hinrichs, 7-2. He pinned Jaxson Hinkle of Marshalltown in 2:44.
Dodger Hunter Kasperbauer picked up a fall in 5:36 at 113 pounds versus the Bobcats.
“Damien and Hunter (Kasperbauer) had some strong performances,” Thompson said. “It was good to see them go out and win.”
Drake Hayes (126) tallied a fall in 3:36 against the Bobcats. No. 11 Rylee Brown (157) earned a 12-5 decision against Marshalltown’s Carson Wright.
Jesse Egli (175) prevailed by a 5-0 count against Dalton Zednichek.
“We still have to clean up some of the small stuff,” Tompson said. “We have to be more consistent in our performance each and every time on the mat, especially now that it’s late January.
“After our Mason City dual (next week), we are in the postseason. We need to get ready.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday when they head to Urbandale for the Ed Winger Invitational. Action begins at 9 a.m.
