Gael basketball teams finally return home

For the first time in 2025, the St. Edmond basketball teams will compete inside their home gym.

The Gaels host Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday night and welcome in Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Friday for a boys-only contest.

Last week, the ninth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys (10-2 overall, 5-2 in the North Central Conference) reeled off four consecutive wins on the road, including three by double figures.

Hunter Horn scored nearly 100 points in the four games, as he is averaging a team-high 23.4 per game with almost 10 rebounds. Junior classmates Carson Bargfrede and Jakob Koopman are both at 10 points a night.

For the Cadets (3-9, 2-4), Kale Kalous averages almost 22 points a night but is the lone player in double figures. These two met a week ago in Iowa Falls, with the Gaels posting an 86-55 victory.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (5-8, 2-5) is paced by underclassmen Chaz Lane, Johnny Lomeli and Huxley Lingenfelter. Lane averages almost 18 points, with Lomeli and Lingenfelter around nine.

St. Edmond won the first meeting between the two in early December by a score of 72-39.

For the Gael girls (5-6, 1-4), they will hit the court just once this week after having a planned contest with Coon Rapids-Bayard on Monday called off due to weather. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows does not have a varsity program this season because of low numbers.

Much like the SEHS boys, the girls capped off a perfect week last Friday with a 48-44 victory over Webster City. Chloe Palmer averages just under 10 points per game with 3.5 assists to lead the Gaels, while seniors Josie Harvey and Payton Bradley are right behind.

Anna Lursen is one of the top rebounders in the NCC, posting almost 12 boards a game. Palmer averages just under seven; Harvey, six.

Iowa Falls-Alden (7-7, 2-4) features freshman Elody England, who averages 12.6 points a night. The Cadets have won the last 16 in the series, including a 45-39 decision earlier this year.

Starting at $2.99/week.
