Gael boys take care of WB-M

The eighth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys had no trouble securing a win here Thursday night over West Bend-Mallard, 90-32.

Things definitely didn’t go completely as planned for the Gaels, though.

Junior standout Hunter Horn was lost early in the contest after suffering an ankle injury. Horn, who finished with eight points and three rebounds in the first quarter, was on crutches after.

“It swelled up on him right away, but his dad (Iowa Central athletic trainer Guy Horn) and the medical staff was right there to get it taped up and ice on it,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “He’s got great people to care for it. He’ll be out for Friday (St. Edmond travels to Hampton-Dumont/CAL), and we’ll just see from there how it all progresses.”

With Horn out, classmates Jakob Koopman, Grant Galles and Carson Bargfrede picked up the scoring and then some. Koopman flirted with a first half triple-double, ending the night with 18 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals, four assists and a blocked shot.

Galles had 14 points and Bargfrede finished with eight and six boards.

“Jakob did a great job,” Kochendorfer said. “He showed what he is capable of out there on both ends. Grant continues to be a steady player for us and Carson did a nice job on the glass.”

Reserve Ty Mericle came on for St. Edmond (14-2 overall) and scored 20 points, knocking down four 3-pointers. Jacob Nieland finished with eight points and four rebounds, while Andrew Clavey had seven points and three boards.

Horn moved ahead of Cory Bargfrede — the father of Carson Bargfrede — and into 16th on the school’s career scoring list with 863 points.

For the Wolverines (2-14), Carson Schnieder scored 11.

The Gaels will carry an eight-game win streak into Friday when they take on the Bulldogs, who they earned a 65-35 decision over earlier this year.
