Homestand for FD hoop squads
The Fort Dodge basketball teams will hit the court twice this week, with both doubleheaders taking place inside the Dodger gym.
Up first will be Marshalltown on Tuesday night, followed by a visit from Ames Friday.
Tip both nights is set for 6:15 p.m. with the varsity girls games. Boys will follow.
The Fort Dodge girls (7-9 overall, 2-4 in the IAC North) are 3-2 over the last five, but are coming off a 57-25 setback at Mason City last Friday.
LJ Maehl, a junior, is averaging just under 18 points per game on 48 percent shooting from the field. She is also the leading rebounder for the Dodgers at almost eight per outing.
Senior Meah McCaleb adds eight points, 5.5 rebounds and a team-leading four assists, while junior Dakota Pommer is at 6.6 points and four rebounds a night. McCaleb is also among the Class 4A leaders in steals.
Marshalltown (5-9, 0-5) has lost two straight since posting a 42-2 victory over Des Moines North. The Bobcats are led by sophomore Frankie Long and junior Miller Heitmann offensively.
Fort Dodge has owned the series with Marshalltown, going 26-7 since 2006. The Dodgers have prevailed 11 straight times.
Earlier this season, they posted a 40-21 victory at The Roundhouse.
Ames (8-7, 5-0) holds a half-game lead in the IAC North standings over Mason City. The Little Cyclones snapped a two-game losing streak with a 54-37 victory over Waterloo East last time out.
Ames is 29-4 versus the Dodgers since 2007, with the four FDSH wins all coming in a row between 2021-23. Senior Karsyn Pankonen leads Ames at 15 points per game.
Behind Taevon Feeley’s double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, the Fort Dodge boys (3-11, 1-5) picked up their first league win of the season over Mason City last Friday.
Senior Cade Westerhoff leads the Dodgers in scoring and rebounding. Classmate Carter Woodruff is second in scoring and first in assists.
Marshalltown (4-10, 2-3) is paced by junior Kyle Smith, who averages 19 points and eight rebounds.
The series between the two teams is tied at 18-all since 2006, with the Bobcats taking the last three and nine of the last 10 overall.
No. 10 (Class 4A) Ames (13-2, 5-0) leads the league and has only lost to top-ranked (4A) Cedar Falls and Dallas Center-Grimes. Senior Jamison Poe — a former Dodger — averages a team-high 11 points per game with Isaiah Knight and Abram Vos both over nine.
Since 2007, the Little Cyclones have won 31 of the 33 meetings between the old Big 8 rivals, including each matchup since 2018.
