RED-HOT CATS
HUMBOLDT — The St. Edmond boys ran into a hot-shooting Humboldt here Tuesday night, suffering their first loss of the season, 95-66.
The Wildcats knocked down 17 3-pointers in the game, including seven by reigning Class 3A football player of the year Coen Matson.
Humboldt (3-4 overall, 3-1 in North Central Conference) was coming off an 86-75 loss to Mason City over the weekend but were clicking on all cylinders from the start in this one. They have gone 3-2 over the last five with the other loss coming to NCC leader Clear Lake.
Matson led five players in double figures, scoring 21. Elliot Carlson added 19 with both Mason Van Pelt and Jackson Flaherty finishing with 16. Jackson Dodd added 14.
“We just ran into a buzzsaw,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “They shot the ball extremely well and that is just part of playing in this conference. You have to be ready and this was a good lesson for them.”
Hunter Horn scored 23 for the Gaels (6-1, 3-1), who were ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in the first rankings released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association on Monday. Grant Galles and Andrew Clavey each scored 12, with Jakob Koopman a dding 10.
“Our schedule is challenging but it’s good for us too,” Kochendorfer said. “We need this kind of competition to get us ready.”
Humboldt held a slim 23-18 lead after the first, turning that into a 42-28 advantage at the half. They outscored St. Edmond in the third, 30-20.
St. Edmond returns to the court on Friday when they travel to Clear Lake. Up next for the Wildcats will be Newell-Fonda on Thursday and Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday.
