Riverhawks top FD boys

The Fort Dodge boys coaching staff thought they had the right plan of attack set for a hectic three-game week.

But Mason City had other ideas.

The Riverhawks used a 24-9 third quarter edge to help earn a convincing 78-35 victory here Monday night inside the FDSH gym.

Coming off a win over Des Moines East last Friday, Fort Dodge (1-6 overall, 0-3 in the IAC North) was unable to overcome ice-cold shooting that followed a lengthy delay after a fire alarm.

Both teams were sent off the court multiple times as school officials worked to resolve the situation.

Once they did, a tight back-and-forth battle between rivals ensued, as Mason City (4-3, 2-1) led by just three points after one. The Riverhawks expanded the advantage to 12 at the break, though, on the heels of a pair of 3-pointers from Marcele Whitner.

“Whatever buttons we pushed (last Friday), we need to figure out what those were and hit them again,” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “But for starters, we have to show more heart and effort. Those are two things we can control no matter who we are playing. And we need to.”

Freshman Reggie Pederson led the way for the Dodgers with 13 points. Carter Woodruff added six and Tytrell Mosley had five.

“Reggie did an incredible job out there,” Williams said. “He is one that played with that heart and effort we’re talking about all night long.”

For the Riverhawks — who won 86-75 at Humboldt on Saturday — Ty Sanchez-Evans scored 17 and Whitner added 12. Sanchez-Evans also had 10 rebounds while Andrew Novak added nine points and nine boards.

Mason City held a 42-32 edge on the glass.

After firing up plenty of 3-pointers in the opening half, the Riverhawks went to the basket more over the final 16 minutes, converting easy layups off steals and offensive rebounds. They forced 23 Fort Dodge turnovers, winning for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings between the rivals.

The Dodgers return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Ames, then close out the week on Friday at Sioux City West.
