Gaels prevail away from home for fourth time this week
WEBSTER CITY — Playing just 24 hours after surviving a scare at Manson Northwest Webster, the St. Edmond boys finished off a four-game week with a fourth consecutive victory, topping Webster City here Friday night by a final of 68-47.
After losing for the first time last week, the Gaels (10-2 overall, 5-2 in the North Central Conference) have reached double-digit wins for the second straight season after going four consecutive years without doing so.
Junior Hunter Horn scored a game-high 28 points, including 22 in the second half, while Grant Galles added 12 and Jakob Koopman had 11. Carson Bargfrede chipped in nine, scoring 53 points this week after returning to the floor following an injury last month.
“This was a tough one to get,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “As a coach, you worry about them looking at the records too much and being flat after Thursday. But we came out and played hard.
“We did a better job of playing their cuts and screens in the second quarter, which allowed us to get into the passing lanes. That was probably our best quarter on defense and rebounding.”
Horn finished the week with 93 points in four games.
For the Lynx (3-9, 2-4), Matthew Tesdahl scored 17 points and Carter Mickelson added 11.
“Webster City is much better than their record shows,” Kochendorfer said. “They are always going to play you tough, especially on their home court.”
After leading by four points following the first quarter, St. Edmond took control in the second, outscoring Webster City 21-5. The visitors took a 13-point lead into the fourth.
Koopman had a double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds, while Horn had seven boards. Andrew Clavey added five points and seven rebounds.
“Andrew has been doing a much better job of going to the glass,” Kochendorfer said. “He’s a strong, athletic kid.”
The 10-2 start for the Gaels is their best since the 2015-16 team opened the year 11-3 and finished the season 17-7 — the most wins for the program in the last decade.
St. Edmond plays at home for the first time since Dec. 20 when they host Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday. The team closes the year by playing seven of nine inside the Gael gym.
