Ross earns title in Urbandale

URBANDALE — Dreshaun has only been back competing for about 10 days and has been picking up right where he left off.

The top-ranked (IAwrestle) 215-pound two-time state champion picked up his second invitational in seven days.

“This is an elite tournament with 23 teams,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “These are the top 3A teams in the state with over 90 ranked kids.”

Ross notched his 100th career victory in the quarterfinals and finished the day at 102-2 for his career.

In the finals, one of the hottest Div. I football and wrestling recruits, earned his 11th win of the season, dominating top-ranked Mason Koehler (31-4) of Glenwood 21-6 in 1:54.

In the semifinals Ross earned a 19-4 tech fall in 2:28 over ninth-ranked Joseph Monge of Lewis Central.

He picked up two first period falls in his opening two matches.

“Dreshaun was dominant,” Thompson said. “It only took him two minutes to score 21 points and beat the top-ranked kid in Class 2A.

“He is starting to get into more of a groove and rhythm.”

Top-ranked senior Koy Davidson placed second at 144 pounds. Davidson lost a 4-1 SV1 decision to Valley’s third-ranked Jahbari Clark.

It was a tight match for the top-five wrestlers and first this season.

Davidson (28-2) went 3-1 on the day with two falls and a major decision.

The Oregon State recruit is now 136-18 is currently ninth on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list. He is one win behind Erik Birnbaum (137-38).

“That’s the match you can lose in January, but not February,” Thompson said. “We hope that this match can be a kickstart and Koy just remains focused and moves forward. Koy just got sucked into wrestling Clark’s style.”

The Dodgers had five other medalists on the day as Jesse Egli (175) was fourth. Damien Yeoman (106), 11th-rated Rylee Brown (157) and sixth-ranked Joe Constable (285) both placed fifth.

Egli (27-11) won three matches. He lost both his matches to third-ranked Nolan Noland of Carlisle.

“He lost to the same kid twice, but he made improvements as the day went on,” Thompson said. “The kid he lost to he can beat and he was in a winnable match.”

Yeoman (27-16) had two falls and a major decision on the day.

“Damien has been wrestling well,” Thompson said. “He just needs to be consistent.”

Brown (28-15) pinned seventh-ranked Dominic Tigner of Norwalk in 4:15 in the quarterfinals. He lost a 10-1 decision to top-ranked Bas Diaz of Waverly-Shell Rock.

“Rylee had a big win over the No. 4 seed,” Thompson said. “Rylee just has to build his consistency and then he will be talking medals.”

Constable (33-6) lost in the quarterfinals to second-ranked Kolton Borcherding-Johnson of Norwalk in a tight 2-1 decision. He picked up three wins.

“Joe just got a bad seed,” Thompson said. “This heavyweight field was stacked.”

Senior Hunter Kasperbauer continued his hot-streak, winning four matches to place eighth at 150 pounds. Kasperbauer (14-21) has won six matches in the past three days.

The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they host Mason City.

“Hunter has had a good last couple of days,” Thompson said. “He picked up two wins in the triangular and then got four more on Saturday.”
