St. Edmond honoring Miller at school Friday
When times are tough and people are grieving, Fort Dodge is truly a community that comes together to support one another.
After the tragic passing of Fort Dodge Middle School assistant principal Aaron Miller, people from all different walks of life have come together to support those in need and suffering most.
The St. Edmond school district will don Dodger colors on Friday, as they plan to wear Fort Dodge’s Red and Black during the school day in recognition of Miller and their grieving neighbors.
“I was trying to think of ways we can show our support for the (Fort Dodge) family,” said St. Edmond elementary school counselor Dana Oswald. “A small gesture of kindness to show unity in our community.”
Miller was a 2007 graduate from Fort Dodge Senior High. He coached football, basketball, baseball, and was heading into his seventh season as assistant varsity softball coach.
He started teaching in the school district in the fall of 2013, and was in his first year serving as an administrator.
“The Fort Dodge School district has endured an incredible loss, but has also gained an immense amount of positive memories,” Oswald said. “The St. Edmond counselors had the privilege to be invited to the FDMS on Monday to assist with needs of staff and students in wake of Mr. Miller’s death.
“While doing so, it was apparent Mr. Miller had an incredible impact on the kids and the community.”
The students and faculty of St. Edmond want Dodgers to know they aren’t going through this alone.
“To the family, friends, and colleagues of Aaron Miller, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you,” Oswald said. “St. Edmond stands with you in this difficult time.
“To show our love to Aaron’s family and friends, we will be honoring Aaron wearing Dodger colors on Friday.”
There are no barriers when such a significant portion of a town is grieving this deeply.
“During this difficult time, it is crucial that we, as a community, show our unity and support for the family, friends, and colleagues affected by this loss,” Oswald said. “We stand together with our public school staff, knowing their hard work, compassion, and commitment to the future of Fort Dodge are the foundation of a strong community.”
Grief is a difficult process, but when friends are there for support, it can help soften the struggle.
“Grief does not separate us, but rather, reminds us of our shared humanity,” Oswald said. “We encourage everyone to take a moment and reflect on the impact Mr. Miller had on your lives. We must extend kindness to those who are struggling with the loss. The strength of our community lies in how we support each other in times of sorrow.
“Prayers to Aarons’ family, students, colleagues, athletes, and anyone who had the honor of knowing Aaron.”
Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fort Dodge Middle School. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday back at the FDMS, with burial at North Lawn Cemetery.
Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Fort Dodge is handling arrangements.
People attending Friday or Saturday are asked to wear Dodger apparel in honor of Miller.
St. Edmond Activities Director David Flattery said the Gaels are proud to show their support.
“St. Edmond joins Fort Dodge Community Schools in mourning the loss of Aaron,” Flattery said. Our hearts are with the Miller family.
“We will proudly wear red and black (Friday) to show our support, and we continue to pray for comfort for everyone during this difficult time.”
