Three doubleheaders in four days for St. Edmond
Another busy week awaits the St. Edmond basketball teams, as they hit the court three times over the next four days.
Up first will be a North Central Conference doubleheader inside the Gael gym on Tuesday night opposite Algona. St. Edmond then steps out of NCC play to host West Bend-Mallard Thursday, before hitting the road for a twinbill at Hampton-Dumont/CAL Friday.
Tip on all three nights is set for 6:15 p.m. with the varsity girls contests. Boys will follow
Riding a six-game win streak, the eighth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys look to keep the momentum going. Junior Hunter Horn continues to rank among the league leaders at 24 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Classmate Jakob Koopman adds 10 and eight, with another junior — Carson Bargfrede — chipping in 10 points per night.
Jack McElroy, also a junior, averages six assists per game.
Algona (6-8, 3-4) enters having picked up two straight wins, as senior Ben Helmers scored 51 last week in a win over Pocahontas Area. He is averaging 25 points, with Evan Allie next in line.
Earlier this year, the Gaels earned a 69-53 victory over the Bulldogs. They have won two of the last three in the series after Algona put together a 11-game win streak from 2018-23.
West Bend-Mallard (2-13) is paced by sophomore Abner Zaugg and freshman Kacen Flynn. The Wolverines own just one win over St. Edmond in four meetings since 2021.
Hampton-Dumont/CAL (3-11, 1-7) is coached by Fort Dodge Senior High grad Brian Niesen. The Bulldogs, led by juniors Brady Harr and Caden Woods, have lost six straight.
In December, St. Edmond snapped a five-game losing skid to Hampton-Dumont/CAL with a 63-35 victory.
The Gael girls (5-8, 1-5) will play the same three opponents, who have a combined record of 39-8 on the year. St. Edmond has won three of its last four, including three in a row on the road.
Sophomore Chloe Palmer leads the team in scoring and assists, averaging 9.2 and 3.5, respectively. Senior Josie Harvey is at nine points a night, while classmate Anna Lursen averages almost 12 rebounds.
Algona (13-3, 8-0) is ranked eighth in 3A and one game ahead of Hampton-Dumont/CAL in the NCC standings. Sophomores Hayden McLaughlin and Hayden Kuhlmann are each averaging 10 points, with senior Lauren McLaughlin at 9.7.
West Bend-Mallard (11-4) is just 1-3 over the last five, but that includes losses to ranked Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda. Senior Hailey Stalzer averages 18.6 points, with Tiffany Fehr at 12 a night.
No. 13 (3A) Hampton-Dumont/CAL has won five in a row since a loss to Algona. They are paced by Jordan and Brooklyn Valley, as the seniors average 23 points combined.
