It was a night for the seniors in the Fort Dodge gym on Thursday.
The 24th-ranked Dodger wrestling team’s 12th-grade trio didn’t disappoint, as Fort Dodge (8-4 overall) rolled past Mason City by a final of 67-9 in their last regular-season dual.
Before the festivities began, 20-year Dodger head coach Bobby Thompson received a plaque for picking up his 300th career dual victory at Marshalltown last week.
“We came out and were aggressive,” said Thompson. “Even in the matches we lost, we worked hard. And those were winnable matches too.”
Seniors Hunter Richardson (150), defending state champion Koy Davidson (144) and John Phan (190) all earned bonus-point victories. Senior Alex Jensen was also honored.
Richardson continued his hot streak, winning his seventh match in the past week.
The senior started the dual with a third period fall (5:35) over Nikolay Gonzalez.
“Hunter has worked really hard to get where he is,” Thompson said. “He is a rock solid, true Dodger.”
Davidson wasted little time in his match against Aidyn Kline, earning a 19-1 technical fall in 1:37.
“Koy is a blueprint for what a marquee Dodger wrestler is,” Thompson said. “He has worked so hard, ever since he was a little kid.
“It’s hard to believe he is already a senior.”
“In my 33 years of coaching, there haven’t been many like him. He’ll always have a special place in my heart and this program.”
Phan won by forfeit.
“John has been here since his freshman year,” Thompson said. “He earned his way.”
Fort Dodge prevailed in 12 matches on the night. The Dodgers recorded four falls, three technical falls, one major decision and picked up four forfeits.
Joe Constable (285) earned the fastest fall of the evening, pinning Frenson Wichep in 14 seconds.
Two-time state qualifier Jesse Egli (175) was next in line with a 39-second pin versus Samuel Collins.
Top-rated and two-time state champion Dreshaun Ross (215) pinned Joseph Hauser in 57 seconds. Two-time state qualifier Rylee Brown (157) dominated Carter Rockwell, scoring a 19-4 tech fall in 1:38.
Jayce Skow (165) also picked up a technical fall, beating Isaiah Torres in 2:20 by a 17-2 margin.
Freshman Drake Hayes (126) drubbed DeForrest Snow, blanking him 13-0 for a major decision. Trace Rial (106), Damien Yeoman (113) and Brexton Hines (132) all picked up forfeits.
Zander Jones logged a junior varsity win for the Dodgers. Jones was a transfer from Greene County who joined the Dodgers for his senior season.
“He came to us from Greene County,” Thompson said. “This team has adopted him as one of our own. When you become a Dodger, you are taken care of.”
Fort Dodge will look to defend its Iowa Alliance Conference tournament title on Saturday at Mason City.
Fort Dodge won four titles last winter. Ross is the lone returning champion for the Dodgers. Davidson and Brown return as runner-ups.
“It was fun to wrestle at home in the regular-season finale,” Thompson said. “Now we hit the road for the conference meet, travel for regional duals (in Altoona on Tuesday), and host the district meet (Feb. 8).
“Now we have to have our eyes on the prize.”
