Career night for Westerhoff

Dodger boys prevail in regular-season finale at Perry

PERRY — The Fort Dodge boys basketball squad closed the regular season in style here Tuesday, defeating Perry by a final of 72-62 for their fifth victory of the new year.

Senior Cade Westerhoff had a career-high 28 points and 21 rebounds as the Dodgers (5-16 overall) led by as many as 18 in the second half before holding off a furious charge by the homestanding Bluejays (12-9) late.

“We just played really hard as a team and left it all on the floor,” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “That’s what we wanted from them and will continue to preach: regardless of the score or the outcome, give us everything you’ve got.

“It’s not easy to win on the road, and they made a run. We knew they would. Our guys didn’t panic and closed it out, which is a great sign of their growing maturity and trust in each other.”

The 6-foot-3 Westerhoff feasted with a double-double in each half. He also added six assists, four steals, and had a dunk as well.

“Cade obviously had a big game,” Williams said. “The points are one thing, but the rebounds were just huge and physical.

“We got great effort from everyone, though. That’s what it takes on the road. Everyone fought, brought energy, and (logged) positive minutes.”

Senior point guard Carter Woodruff added 16 points for FDSH.

Perry had trimmed a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to four with under two minutes left in regulation, but the Dodgers closed on a 9-3 run.

Fort Dodge had built a comfortable lead by the intermission thanks to a 20-7 advantage in the second quarter.

Geren Kenney had 23 points for the Bluejays, but Owen Myers — the team’s second-leading scorer behind Kenney at 18 points per contest — was held to 7.

The Dodgers open Class 4A substate play on Monday at Dallas Center-Grimes (16-5). The Mustangs, who have won nine straight, went unbeaten in Little Hawkeye Conference play to capture the league championship.

Tip is set for 7 p.m.
