Dodger girls back in the win column
DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls basketball squad snapped a five-game losing streak with a 69-16 victory at Des Moines North on Friday.
Junior LJ Maehl scored 25 points for the Dodgers (8-13 overall) in their final regular-season road contest of the year. Fort Dodge closes with a home game against Des Moines Roosevelt on Tuesday before tournament play begins.
“It was nice to get back in the win column,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “When you’re playing an (0-15) team, you have to be better about setting your own tempo and making sure you get after it. Take care of yourself and don’t go through the motions.
“I thought we were kind of a step behind in the first half. We talked at halftime about not being lackadaisical and satisfied to win just by showing up. The second half was better from an intensity standpoint.”
Maehl added eight rebounds. The Dodgers also got double-digit production from sophomore Ellie Doster (13 points) and junior Dakota Pommer (11).
“We’ve talked about needing more (offensive) options and trying to show better balance,” Messerly said. “Having three in double figures is a step in the right direction. It was good to get a few other kids going. It was also great to see a senior (reserve) like Janelle (Derrig) contribute three (field goals).”
Maehl became the school’s all-time 5-on-5 scoring leader for a junior. She also holds that title for her freshman and sophomore outputs, and ranks third on the career scoring charts at FDSH.
The Dodgers face the Roughriders at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday inside the FDSH gym.
