Five Dodgers are looking to make their return to Wells Fargo Arena and the rest of the lineup is ready to make an impact.
The Dodgers will host a Class 3A, District 4 in the Dodger gym on Saturday.
Joining Fort Dodge will be Ankeny Centennial, LeMars, Lewis Central, Sioux City East, Sioux City North, Sioux City West and Spencer.
Weigh-ins begin at 8 a.m. with wrestling to start at 10 a.m.
“It’s great to be able to compete in our home gym,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “We don’t have to worry about coming down early and the weather. This is the smallest tournament that we have competed in and we have to be focused. It’s now or never.
“It’s a huge benefit for sure with our home crowd that is amazing.”
The Dodgers have had about a week off after competing in a regional dual on Feb. 4.
“We have a had a big break (about two weeks),” Thompson said. “We have been working more on the mental and attitude.”
Oregon State commit Koy Davidson (144) is looking to finish as a four-time state qualifier. Junior Dreshaun Ross (215) is vying for his third state championship.
Juniors Rylee Brown (157) and Jesse Egli (175) are aiming for their third state trips and sophomore Trace Rial (106) is wanting his second spot.
The third-ranked (IAwrestle) Davidson (32-2), who is 140-19 in his career and ranks ninth on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list, is a defending state champion as well as a runner up and a fourth-place finish.
The top-ranked Ross (15-0), has committed to wrestle at Oklahoma State, is 106-2 in his career and has won 99 consecutive matches.
“With our veterans, they are seasoned and they’ve been through this,” Thompson said. “They have watched this as kids and know our traditions. We really lean on these guys to help the younger kids.”
Along with the defending champions, Fort Dodge has six-ranked wrestlers. Rial (No. 9), Brown (No. 9), Egli (No. 9) and sophomore Joe Constable (No. 4) are also rated.
Freshman Damien Yeoman (32-16), Brown (31-15), Egli (30-11) and Constable (35-6) have all eclipsed the 30-win mark.
“With the younger kids, we want to get them mentally right,” Thompson said. “They’ve been through the grind. They know this isn’t going to be the Donnybrook.
“They just have to wrestle hard and they can make things happen.”
Ranked for Lewis Central is Zaner Manz (No. 8 at 106), Weston Porter (No. 3 at 113), Carter Schorsch (No. 9 at 132), Jaxon Brewer (No. 8 at 138), Paxton Blanchard (No. 8 at 190) and Joseph Monge (No. 6 at 215).
Ankeny Centennial enters with three ranked wrestlers. Ranked No. 4 at 150 pounds is Isaac Bruhl. Bruhl is the son of Fort Dodge state champion Brad Bruhl.
Maximus Dhabolt (157) is ranked No. 1 and Cale Vandermark (120) is rated second.
Levi Johnson is ranked sixth at 157 for Spencer.
