Dodgers ousted in regionals
PLEASANT HILL — The Fort Dodge wrestling team lost to Cedar Rapids Prairie 68-9 here on Tuesday in a Class 3A, Region 1 semifinal dual.
The Dodgers (8-5 overall), who are focusing on preparing for districts and the state tournament, won two matches with an incomplete lineup.
“We want to be ready for districts and the (individual) state tournament,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson “We will have a little over a week and a half off now to get healthy and earn as many state bids as we can for traditional state.”
Senior Hunter Richardson started the dual off for the Dodgers with a 13-2 major decision over Garan Hynek at 150 pounds.
Senior Koy Davidson (32-2) finished the dual with a 17-0 technical fall in 2:21 over Cohen Yossi. The Oregon State recruit is now 139-18 in his career and is ninth on the all-time win list. He trails 2024 FDSH graduate Damarion Ross (141-34) for eighth on the charts.
The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15, when they host a Class 3A district meet in the FDSH gym.
Cowboys edge Humboldt for state dual berth
HUMBOLDT — Humboldt built a 31-9 lead on Clarion-Goldfield/Dows in a Class 2A, Region 8 dual contest, but couldn’t hold on here on Tuesday.
The Cowboys won five of the final six matches to clinch a spot in state duals next weekend.
After falling into a 22-point hole, CG-D preaviled in five straight matches — four by fall and one by technical fall — to build a 38-31 edge. The Cowboys forfeited the final weight for a 38-37 win.
Starting the five-match run was a fall by JT Kelso (285), Paxton Redenius (106), Angel Cortes (113), Linden Phetxoumphone (120), as well as a tech fall from Adrian Phetxoumphone (126).
Earning wins by fall for the Wildcats were Owen Mayall (138), Tyce Clarken (144), Broedy Hendricks (190) and Cael Donahe (215). Braden Downs (157) preaviled by decision and Landon Halverson (165) picked up a major decision.
Colin Sesker (150) recorded an early decision for the Cowboys, and Charlie Campbel (175) had a fall.
The Cowboys cruised to a 50-17 triumph over Hampton-Dumont/CAL to advance to the final.
Earning falls were Kelso and Ryan Hartwig (126). Adrian Phetxoumphone, Campbell and Linden Phetxoumphone earned technical falls. Caleb Seaba (165), and Ryland Morgan (175) had major decisions.
Kolton Hefti (138), Sesker and Traesyn Cope (215) had decisions. Redenius won by forfeit.
No. 1 Algona will return to state
ALGONA — Top-ranked Algona cruised to a return trip to the Class 2A state dual tournament here on Tuesday.
The North Central Conference champions beat West Marshall 58-16 to advance to state duals this Saturday in Coralville.
Algona won 11 of the 14 matches, including 10 by bonus points.
Recording falls were Isaac Wilson (126), CJ McGregor (132), Elijaah Wilhite (138), Carter McGregor (165), Brody Shipler (190), Gavin Goche (215) and Jack Limbaugh (285).
Tate Slagle won by technical fall (157). Tayten Runnel (175) and Teague Alesch (106) earned major decisions.
Barrett Morgan (144) prevailed by decision.
West Marshall advanced to the championship round with a 46-33 victory over Crestwood, Cresco. They won eight matches — all by bonus points — with seven pins.
