Edwards powers Iowa Central men

The Iowa Central men pushed their win streak to five with an 85-66 victory over Dakota County Tech on Sophomore Day here Saturday inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

One of those sophomores, Riley Edwards, put together a career day as the Tritons (17-11 overall) raced out to an early lead and never looked back.

Edwards, a former Southeast Polk standout and the son of ex-Fort Dodge Senior High boys head basketball coach Brad Edwards, scored 22 points, knocking down six 3-pointers to lead the way.

Two other second-year players, Terrius Walker and Daviyon Gaston, had key games. Walker recorded a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Gaston had 12 points and seven assists.

“I really challenged our group to come out in the second half with a lot more energy,” ICCC head coach Ryan Kirsch said. “We talked about how special sophomore day is and just how special it is to play college basketball at any level. It was so awesome for our three sophomores to be our leading scorers, especially for Riley to blow it open for us.

“He has worked tremendously hard and I’m so proud of him to see him come out and do what he did along with Daviyon and Terrius.”

As a team, Iowa Central made 12 three-pointers and shot 49 percent from the field. Cooper Randall had three of those triples with CJ Mitchell also scoring nine points.

For Dakota County Tech (8-18), Chris Owen had 19 points, Lorenzo Levy had 12 and Juzavious Dickerson pulled down 11 rebounds.

Edwards went off in the second half, draining five of his triples while going 6 of 10 from the field for 17 points. Walker had 10 in the final 20 minutes as the Tritons outscored Dakota County Tech, 44-30.

Iowa Central closes out the regular season Wednesday at Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City. The Tritons are currently tied with Ellsworth and Iowa Western for third in the ICCAC.
