DES MOINES — Friday night didn’t go the way the Humboldt wrestling team wanted, but the Wildcats still have a trio ready to bring home top medals.
Seniors Cyler Cirks (132) and Tyce Clarken (138), along with sophomore Broedy Hendricks (190), suffered semifinal losses in the Class 2A state tournament.
Cirks (34-9), the 11 seed, couldn’t get past seventh-seeded Carter Cajthaml (49-6) of NH/TV.
The Wildcat four-sport athlete will now face fifth-seed Kaiden Parker (37-7) of Oskaloosa in the consolation semifinals.
Cirks has 137 career victories, and is making his third state appearance.
Clarken (39-6), who was eighth at state last year, earned the four seed this time around.
After Friday’s setback, he will compete against No. 11 Tanner Wilson (31-7) of Independence in the consolation semifinals.
Hendricks (44-4), the four seed at 190, ran into top-seeded Brenden Heying (48-1) of Benton. The Wildcat underclassman lost 4-1 in a tight match.
Heying, who is going to St. Cloud State to wrestle, is four-time qualifier and three-time medalist with a career record of 162-16. He placed fourth as a junior and sixth as a sophomore.
Hendricks will now square off with No. 14 Brendan Lamfers (40-10) of Sioux Center in the consolation semifinals.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows junior Linden Phetxoumphone (34-3) was looking to return to the Saturday night finals. Last year, while wrestling for Webster City, Phetxoumphone — who has a 110-38 career record — took second. He was also third as a freshman.
In his 120-pound semifinal on Friday night, the second seed fell to No. 3 Easton Enyeart (35-3) of Ballard by a score of 4-1.
On deck in the consolation semifinals is fifth seeded Jon Gonzalez (41-4) of West Marshall.
Phetxoumphone’s sophomore brother, Adrian, will wrestle for seventh place at 126. Adrian Phetxoumphone (41-4) pinned Independence’s Carver Wieland (42-15) in 5:30 to reach the podium at 126 pounds. He then suffered a 5-2 defeat to Jayce Curry (13-2) of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
With the loss, Adrian will compete for seventh against Jesse Jens (50-4) of Harlan.
Sophomore Charlie Campbell (175) won in the blood round and suffered a loss in a placement match.
Campbell (42-5) beat Dain Burkhart (39-6) of Fairfield 11-2, and then lost to Braylen Bieber (43-11) of Independence.
The fifth-seeded Cowboy will compete against No. 6 Blake Mather (36-11) of West Delaware in the seventh-place match.
Eagle Grove junior Hayden Schafer (44-13) has put together a strong tournament at 157 pounds. After winning in the first round and losing in round two, Schafer won three straight matches to reach the podium.
On Friday the 16th-seeded Eagle won an 11-8 decision over Liam Weber (42-4) of West Delaware. He suffered a 7-1 setback to top-ranked Lucas Kral (48-3) of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
Now Schafer has third-seeded Cason Miller (38-4) of Fairfield.
