DES MOINES — Humboldt seniors Cyler Cirks and Tyce Clarken finished their careers where they wanted to be: on the state podium.

Both Cirks (132) and Clarken (138) placed sixth to close out their time as Wildcat wrestlers with medals around their necks.

“They have been a huge part of this program,” said Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman. “The first couple of days here especially, they did an outstanding job.”

Sophomore Broedy Hendricks (190) took fourth, a year after earning a state runner-up medal.

The Humboldt trio all made Friday night’s semifinal round, losing to higher-seeded wrestlers.

Cirks (34-11) a three-time state qualifier, lost his fifth-place match to Steele Diericks (33-8) of Davenport Assumption. He fell to Kaiden Parker (38-8) of Oskaloosa, 7-1 in the consolation semifinals.

Cirks, the 11 seed, beat sixth-seeded Charlie Showalter (45-6) of Hampton-Dumont/CAL, 10-3, in the second round, an opponent he lost to three times during the season. He then upset third-seed Mason Avila (14-4) of Decorah, 11-8 in the quarterfinals.

Cirks finished with 137 career wins.

“Cyler had a great tournament,” Beaman said. “Winning multiple matches over higher seeds takes the pressure off.”

Clarken (39-8) lost by tech fall to Logan McDonald (48-5) of Grinnell for fifth. He suffered a 14-4 major decision setback to Tanner Wilson (32-8) of Independence in the consolation semifinals.

“I give credit to the coaches competing against Tyce, with his wide-open style,” Beaman said. “He likes to throw and create opportunities.”

Hendricks (45-5) advanced to the third-place match with a 15-0 technical fall win over Brendan Lamfers (41-11) of Sioux Center.

“Broedy knew where the competition was, and that was going all the way to 190,” Beaman said. “Being realistic, any of the top four guys could win that bracket on any given weekend.”

In a match not indicative of the final tally, Hendricks fell 11-4 in SV-1 to Brent Yonkovic (43-6) of West Delaware.

“Now he gets to be the guy in his bracket that nobody wants to be in,” Beaman said. “He is a great competitor. He didn’t beat himself (this year) and competed tough. He fell short and will be back and hungry.

“I’m excited to see where Broedy goes from here.”

Senior Landon Halverson (43-10) went 1-2 at 175 pounds. He had earned a fall on the consolation side.
