CORALVILLE — Mission accomplished.

Brooklyn Robinson wanted to make her senior year at Humboldt memorable, and on Friday night, her lofty goal was achieved as she became the school’s first sanctioned girls state wrestling champion.

“Being a state champion as a senior means the world to me,” Robinson said. “It symbolizes the mindset I’ve had this year. I finally stopped beating myself up on the mat, and beat my opponents instead.

“This season has been about having fun one last time and ending up on top of that podium.”

Robinson was the fourth Wildcat ever to reach the state championship round. Rylee Coyle was a runner-up, and current Alabama softball player Kendal Clark earned both gold and silver during her time at Humboldt.

Those appearances came before the IGHSAU officially sanctioned girls wrestling as a sport.

“I am at a loss for words,” said Humboldt head coach Andy Newell. “She worked her tail off for four years to make that dream come true. She proved to herself that she can do it.

“We are just so proud of her.”

After two first-period falls on opening day to reach the 235-pound semifinal, Robinson (43-6) had to do a little extra work to reach the Class 1A finals.

Robinson, the sixth-seed, pinned No. 2 seed Jocelyn Buffum (39-8) of Missouri Valley in the 34th second of overtime.

She then made quick work of fourth-seeded Kaylee De Jong (36-3) of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in the finals, earning her state title in 29 seconds.

Robinson finished the state tournament with four falls, with three coming in the first period.

Robinson ends her career with an overall record of 106-37.

Manson Northwest Webster senior Adelynn Hudek (145) became the school’s first-ever girls wrestling state medalist. Her classmate, Lucy Kohnen (155), joined her soon after.

Hudek (39-9) went 3-2 in the state tournament and placed seventh, while Kohnen (38-4) took eighth.

On the second day of the 1A tournament, Hudek lost in the consolation third round by a 9-3 decision to Addi Whisner (39-13) of Mount Vernon.

Hudek, a two-time state qualifier who was 66-27 the past two seasons, pinned Cheyenne Dike (34-11) of East Union in the fifth-place match.

Kohnen lost twice on Friday after taking two matches on the consolation side of opening day. She lost by fall to Decorah’s Lauren Luzum (44-4) and Algona’s Regan Jensen.

Kohnen was a three-time state qualifier and is 91-20 the past three seasons.

Algona brought home a three-pack of medals, the school’s first three in girls wrestling. Sophomore Mara Davis (100), senior Marlyn Davis (120) and freshman Regan Jensen (155) all finished on the podium.

Marla Davis (41-11) was fifth at 100 pounds, winning her consolation third round 16-0 over Jazz Christensen of SWAT, 16-0. She lost to Chloe Sheffield (39-5) of Decorah in the consolation semifinals by fall.

Marlyn earned her medal with a 10-3 decision over Audrey Cummings (39-10) of Wilton.

Davis (34-10), a two-time qualifier, lost her first match Friday by an 11-4 decision at 120, but bounced back with a fall in 3:57 over Lillian Gaiser (37-15) of Lisbon.

Jensen (36-10) lost a tight 3-1 decision in the third round of consolations, but pinned Kohnen in 2:44 for the seventh-place medal.
