Strong finish for Maehl, Tritons

It has been a trying season for the Iowa Central women and Lainey Maehl.
But on Sophomore Day Saturday inside Hodges Fieldhouse, the Tritons were able to put together their best game of the season.
Maehl, one of those sophomores honored, recorded a double-double in leading Iowa Central past Marshalltown, 70-54.
The Fort Dodge Senior High graduate tallied 14 points with 14 rebounds, adding a pair of steals in 37 minutes of work. Teammate Kiara Baptiste also had a double-double, scoring 19 points while grabbing 10 boards.
Ashlin Jacobsen was the third Triton (7-21 overall, 2-16 in the ICCAC) player in double figures, scoring 12. Catherine Clemente had seven points and eight rebounds while Olivia Miller tallied nine points.
Sophomores Maehl, Miller and Amaya Terrell were all honored during the doubleheader.
“We’d lost to Marshalltown once already this season, but since we all knew it would be our last time playing together, we wanted to end our season as best as we could,” Maehl said. “We played hard right out of the gates, and it felt like we never lost steam after that.”
Iowa Central raced out to a 17-13 lead and never looked back, going up by 10 at the break before outscoring the Tigers in the fourth to put the contest away, 26-16. Miller scored nine of her points during the final quarter, with Baptiste scoring seven and Maehl five.
For Marshalltown (13-16, 4-14), Mia Sao-Martinez had a game-high 32 points, knocking down 10 three-pointers. Kenijae Cherry added 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Maehl has scored in double figures in 10 of her last 12 games, reaching that mark 15 times this season. She has recorded six double-doubles on the year including back-to-back games.
“We were all proud of the improvements we were able to make throughout the course of the season, individually and as a team, and that we were able to show it in that last game,” Maehl said. “I had so much fun with this team and appreciated them making a day that can be bittersweet into a happy memory for all of us.”
Iowa Central did not advance to the regional tournament, as only the Top-8 qualify.
