Three area teams target girls state bids
Three area teams will compete for spots in the upcoming girls state basketball tournament on Wednesday night.
In Class 1A, Newell-Fonda faces off against Coon Rapids-Bayard at Fort Dodge Senior High. Bishop Garrigan takes on Saint Ansgar in Mason City.
Pocahontas Area squares off with Rock Valley in a 2A final in Kingsley.
Third-ranked Newell-Fonda (19-4 overall) rolled past Woodbury Central last week in semifinal round action, 79-25. The Mustangs shot 55 percent from the field, with Kinzee Hinders scoring 19 points and Ellie Sievers added 11.
Hinders leads the N-F at 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game followed by Sievers at 14 points and Jocee Walsh at eight. Walsh also adds over six rebounds a night.
Coon Rapids-Bayard (18-4) survived a double-overtime contest with St. Edmond, 50-42, as Anna Hart scored 23. Ella Heithoff added 14.
Malia Clayburg is the leading scorer for CR-B, averaging 14 a game. Hart is just over 12 and Aubrey Hofbauer just under seven.
Newell-Fonda earned an 80-33 victory over the Crusaders in the postseason last year and won the only other meeting back in 2013, 68-27.
The Mustangs, who have captured four state titles under head coach Dick Jungers, are seeking the eighth consecutive appearance in Des Moines and 16th overall.
No. 4 Bishop Garrigan (21-3) dominated Harris-Lake Park to advance, 70-31. Sacha Alesch scored 21, with Graclyn Eastman adding 14 and 11 rebounds.
Eastman, a sophomore, leads Garrigan at 17 points and 10 rebounds per game. Alesch, a junior, adds 13 points. Junior Emmi Bartolo is just under 10 points a night.
The Golden Bears and 12th-rated Saint Ansgar (18-5) have met in each of the last two postseasons, with Garrigan winning 64-41 last year and 71-50 in 2023.
In the regional semifinals, the Saints edged Mason City Newman, 46-45, behind 13 points from Amelia Porisch and nine by Jacey Johnston. Porisch averages 16 and Johnston almost 10 per game.
Pocahontas Area (18-5) rallied for a 59-53 win over South Hardin to return to the regional finals. The Indians, who have a pair of state titles under head coach Robert Maske, fell in this round last year after qualifying for state the season before while reaching the semifinals.
A 22-point fourth helped Pocahontas Area erase a seven-point deficit, as Alayna Kakacek scored 18 points. Khloe Mefferd added 14 and Natalie Point 11.
Madison Vial, a senior, is the leading scorer for the Indians at 14 a game followed by Kakacek and Mefferd.
Sixth-ranked Rock Valley (19-3) trumped Alta-Aurelia, 87-45. The Rockets are paced by junior Hudsyn Ranschau, who averages almost 20 points, and senior Miylie Zomer, who adds 13 points and nine rebounds a game.
