Two more steps for Gael boys
WEBSTER CITY — The fourth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys are on the doorstep of a return to the state tournament.
Two hurdles remain in front of the Gaels (20-3 overall), with the first being Mason City Newman here Tuesday night in a District 2 final.
Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the Webster City gym.
St. Edmond scored a convincing 59-16 victory over North Butler last week in the semifinals, as Hunter Horn led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Carson Bargfrede added 11 points with Jakob Koopman grabbing 12 rebounds.
Horn leads the team in scoring at 24.2 per game, shooting over 60 percent from the field. Koopman is second at 11.5 points while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 55 percent from the 3-point line, with Bargfrede adding nine points.
On the glass, Horn averages 9.3 rebounds a game, Koopman 8.5 and Jack McElroy four with a team-leading six assists a night.
The 20 wins for St. Edmond are the most since the 2011-12 season when they went 22-5 and reached the 1A championship game.
Adolph Kochendorfer, who is in his 32nd season leading SEHS, currently sits at 591-317 overall. He ranks 21st on the all-time list of victories by a coach in Iowa and is sixth among active head coaches.
With the Gaels, Kochendorfer is 488-247 on the sidelines with a state championship and four more runner-up finishes. The school has reached state nine times under his guidance since 1993.
Mason City Newman (17-4) has reeled off 10 consecutive wins since a loss in mid-January to Bishop Garrigan. They earned two victories over North Butler, as those are the only common opponents they share with the Gaels.
The Knights are paced by Westley Cole, a sophomore who averages just under 19 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the floor and 37 percent from deep. Senior Colin Bleile adds 11 points and sophomore Thomas McGuire 10.7.
Isaiah Kesten, a senior, leads the way in rebounds (6.1 per game) and assists (six).
Newman has five straight seasons with at least 14 wins and has recorded a winning record in 10 of the last 11 overall. The Knights have made just one appearance at state, qualifying in 1984.
The winner between St. Edmond and Mason City Newman advances to Saturday’s substate final in Humboldt to face either Bishop Garrigan (20-3) or Lake Mills (17-5) for a spot in the state tournament.
