JEWELL — While the careers of two St. Edmond wrestlers came to an end here on Saturday, another Gael made sure his would continue for state tournament week on the grand stage in Des Moines.
Freshman Matthew Crimmins punched a ticket to Wells Fargo Arena beginning on Wednesday by placing second at a Class 1A district meet.
Seniors Sam Myer and Adam Walker both finished third, just missing out on joining Crimmins at state.
Crimmins will compete in the 132-pound bracket, taking a 25-10 record with him after securing a pin and a technical fall around a loss to Don Bosco’s Kanaan Delagardelle in the finals.
“It feels amazing knowing you can compete with the best,” Crimmins said. “We’ve been working real hard this season and I can’t wait to show it down at the Well.”
Crimmins scored a 16-0 technical fall in the opening round in just 1:50 over Berkley Dvorak from North Tama, before pinning Kinnick Munson of Ogden in the semifinals in 2:52.
Over the summer, Crimmins had a chance to battle against some of the best, placing fourth at state AAU.
Myer, who was chasing a third appearance at state, finished the season 28-14 overall. After pinning Roman Bradley of North Tama in 2:52 at 138, he lost to Jariyah Bowles from AGWSR in the semis, 7-5.
In the consolation semifinals, Myer pinned Taylen Secroy of Manson Northwest Webster in 1:15, adding a 16-11 decision over Lane Stringer of ACGC for third. Bowles lost in the finals, though, denying Myer a wrestleback chance.
Walker, who returned from an injury suffered in football this past fall, posted a 16-11 overall record. He earned a fall of Brody Harris from South Hamilton in 61 seconds before being pinned by Jace Pedersen of South Central Calhoun in the semis.
Like Myer, Walker earned two wins on the consolation side for third, pinning AGWSR’s Gage Van Loh in 2:19 and Cayden Dudley from Ogden in 1:58. But also like Myer, he was denied a wrestleback when Pedersen lost in the finals.
Owen Rutherford and Grant Anderson both competed for St. Edmond during the meet.
Don Bosco, who won the state duals title earlier this year, earned the team crown and will advance 11 to state — including 10 individual champions. ACGC finished second, and South Central Calhoun was third overall.
The Titans earned three total tickets to state, as Karson Wuebker and Cooper Nattress will join Pedersen.
Wuebker finished second at 106 pounds, going 3-1 on the day to improve to 49-3. His lone loss came to Don Bosco’s top-ranked Kaiden Belinsky, as he claimed a true-second victory to earn his spot at state.
Nattress locked up silver at 175 thanks to a semifinal win over Aiden Nielsen of Don Bosco, as he will take a 41-14 record into state. Pedersen owns a mark of 20-4 on the year.
Brayden Werneburg and Hayden Stickrod finished third, while Curtis Bullock and Caleb Juhl were fourth for the Titans.
Hendrik Puuraid of Manson Northwest Webster will head to state after placing second at 215 pounds. Puuraid, who is 30-3 on the year, earned a key fall over Michael Fuller of ACGC, which allowed him to claim the automatic bid.
The Cougars had third-place performances from Keaton Wittrock, Hunter Newman and Mason Anderson. Oryan Hanson took fourth.
Pocahontas Area’s William Lawson locked up a spot at state, placing second at 150 pounds. Lawson, 35-3 on the year, earned a fall and a decision, falling only to unbeaten Kolt Knaack of North Tama.
