Area girls earn All-State status

DES MOINES — Eight area athletes were honored by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association as girls all-state basketball players.

Newell-Fonda’s Kinzee Hinders and Bishop Garrigan’s Graclyn Eastman were first team selections in Class 1A alongside North Union’s Ainsley Ulrich, with Ellie Sievers of Newell-Fonda on the second and Bishop Garrigan’s Emmi Bartolo and Sacha Alesch on the third.

In 2A, Pocahontas Area’s Madison Vial and Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany each made the third-team.

Libby Fandel, who led Cedar Rapids Xavier to the 4A state title this past weekend, was named Miss Iowa Basketball. Fandel, who set tournament records for points scored and rebounds in 4A, has signed with the University of Kansas.

Hinders and Sievers helped lead the Mustangs to a record 13th state finals appearance, as they finished second to Council Bluffs St. Albert in the 1A title game. Eastman, Bartolo and Alesch brought the Golden Bears back to state for a sixth straight year, falling in the semifinals to St. Albert.

Hinders, who will join former Iowa Central head women’s basketball coach Brian Ortmeier at Briar Cliff University in the fall, finished her Newell-Fonda career by averaging over 19 points and almost seven rebounds per game.

Sievers, a freshman, posted 14 points while shooting 38 percent from the 3-point line. Her two triples late in a semifinal win over defending champion North Linn helped the Mustangs reach their sixth finals in seven seasons.

Eastman, a sophomore, posted a nightly double-double, averaging 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. She shot 56 percent from the field and added three steals, two blocks and two assists.

Bartolo, a junior, added 10 points with five assists and 2.6 steals, while classmate Alesch added almost 13 points on 35 percent shooting from the 3-point line with three steals, three assists and three rebounds.
