Four Tritons in men’s semifinals

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Iowa Central wrestling team remains within striking distance following a long day of action here Friday at the NJCAA Championships.

Six Tritons in all survived, with four advancing to the semifinals inside the Mid-America Center..

Iowa Central sits in fourth overall with 90.5 points, as ICCAC rival Indian Hills is atop the team standings with 113 and six in the semis. Clackamas is second with 99 and while Western Wyoming is third with 98.5

Drew Cooper, Kaden King, Lawrence Rosario and Coen Grimm are all in the semifinals at their respective weight for Iowa Central, with Jaydale Whitlock and Matthew Roche in the consolation final four.

The championship semifinals will open the day at 9:30 a.m. followed by consolation round action. The finals are set for 6 p.m.

Cooper, the No. 4 seed at 133 pounds, scored three falls, including two in the opening period. He will take on ninth-seeded Lance Olberding of Southeast.

King, also the No. 4 at 165, earned a fall, a technical fall and two decisions, including a 2-1 victory in his third match. He will now take on No. 1 Melton Powe from Pratt.

Rosario advanced at 174 pounds with a pair of technical falls and a decision in the quarterfinals. The No. 5 seed will face top-seed Otgonbayar Batsuurl from Fort Hays Tech in the finals.

Grimm, another Triton seeded fourth, scored three consecutive decisions, highlighted by a 7-6 victory in the quarterfinals to earn a spot vs. No. 1 seed Ali Adel of Harper at 197 pounds.

Whitlock, competing at 125 pounds, went 3-1 with two pins and a decision. He will face Rochester’s Tyson Wilson next. Roche 5-1 day that included five consecutive victories, with two pins and two technical falls.

Up next for Roche will be Kalden Rubash from Northwest at 141 pounds.

Gary Walker III, Chance Davis, Sam Libby and Umair Ahmad were all eliminated.
