Gael boys, girls fare well at Wartburg

WAVERLY — The St. Edmond track and field teams hit the indoor scene one final time this season, competing here Tuesday at the Wartburg Invitational.

Mariah Myers and Aaron Hindt picked up gold medal finishes, as Myers captured the shot put and Hindt the 200-meter dash. The Gael boys took eighth overall, while the girls were 10th.

Myers, a senior, had a throw of 38-7, which ranks 11th in the state so far this year. She won the event by just under two inches.

Hindt, a sophomore, went 23.36 to edge Oelwein’s Caleb DeTemmerman, who clocked a 23.38.

Hindt also added a seventh-place effort in the long jump, leaping 19-3, and a seventh in the 400 at 54.20.

Senior Josie Harvey continued her strong spring, placing fifth in the 55 hurdles in 9.43. She had a qualifying run in the prelims timed at 9.49.

“The girls came out and competed very well against a lot of talented schools,” SEHS girls head coach CJ Tracy said. “Times are slowly getting faster, with small improvements each day and each meet. That will get us ready by the end of the season.

“This is an exciting start to the season, as we now prepare for outdoor meets.”

Anna Lursen was sixth in the 1,500 (5:31.15) and Anthony Valles the same in the 3,200 (10:58.27). Lily Eslick placed eighth in the 3,000 (12:59.60). Erik Larson was 10th in the 3,200 (11:52.73).

The Gaels had three relays all grab eighth: the boys 4×200 and 4×800 along with the girls 4×800. Hindt, Grant Galles, Levi Odor-Westrum and Kinnick Henning ran the 4×200 (1:39.91), with Odor-Westrum, Liam Shannon, Jonah Carlson and Matthew Crimmins competing in the 4×800 (9:25.37).

“Aaron had a great night,” SEHS boys head coach Donn Larson said. “Grant did well for having one shortened practice and getting into a meet. Anthony had a solid time in the 3200, given it’s early.

“I thought all of the boys did well and it was good to see some competition.”

Lursen, Sasha Hess, Alex Leiting and Naomi Valles ran the 4×800 (11:15.37).

Hess, Leiting, Harvey and Lursen were ninth in the 4×400 to conclude the night in a time of 4:35.27.

The Gaels are scheduled to run Monday outdoors for the first time in Earlham for a co-ed meet. The boys also have one final indoor event set for Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
