The Iowa Central baseball team earned a statement sweep of Iowa Western on Wednesday at Rogers Park.
Scores were 5-4 and 4-1 in favor of the 19th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Tritons.
Isaiah Scott delivered the game-winning, walk-off hit in the opener for head coach Eric Stein’s squad, which improved to 20-5 overall and 4-1 in the ICCAC. Scott drove home pinch runner Bryson Carpenter for the dramatic victory.
“We had control of that first game, then let it get away,” Stein said. “To our guys’ credit, we didn’t panic. Even when (the Westerners) took the lead for the first time, we stayed the course.
“It was a fun way to end it, on a two-strike hit by Isaiah. We strung some good at-bats together before he got up, and he hit it hard.”
Iowa Central pitchers dominated the nightcap, only giving up one hit.
Iowa Western (17-12, 5-2) had been unbeaten in league play before Wednesday. The Westerners had their 10-game winning streak snapped.
“Our pitching, for the most part, was great,” Stein said. “We’re still learning how to build consistency. You take things one pitch at a time and go from there.
“We’re heading in the right direction, but still have a long way to go. It’s good to get into these pressure situations and find out what you’re made of, because the stakes are only going to get higher.”
The Tritons return to action on Friday at Indian Hills (9-14). First pitch in Centerville is set for 3 p.m.
Iowa Central is also scheduled to take on the Warriors at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
