Iowa Central’s Moffitt headed to Hall of Fame

Under Luke Moffitt, Iowa Central wrestling has been one of the premier programs in all of NJCAA for the past two decades.

The Tritons have won six national championships, finished in the Top-3 at the national meet 14 times and claimed 36 individual crowns with Moffitt at the controls.

Now, the former University of Iowa Big Ten champion and conference tournament most outstanding wrestler will be enshrined as a member of the NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Saturday in Council Bluffs.

“It is an honor and pretty humbling,” Moffitt said. “There have been a lot of people along the way that have made this possible. It is just a testament to all the people around Iowa Central, the coaching staff and my family.”

A 2022 member of the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame, Moffitt won the 2000 NJCAA national title at Iowa Central competing at 141 pounds before transferring to Iowa where he was a two-year starter for the Hawkeyes.

From there, Moffitt entered into the coaching ranks, where he has compiled a record of 209-63 in duals. The Tritons have earned 118 All-American honors under Moffitt, who has been named the national coach of the year five times.

Joining Moffitt in the Class of 2025 will be fellow ICCAC coach Cole Spree of Indian Hills.

Iowa Central will look to add to its national achievements when they compete Friday and Saturday in Council Bluffs at the NJCAA Tournament. The Tritons qualified all 10 individuals for the meet including regional champions Drew Cooper, Lawrence Rosario and Coen Grimm.

“We are healthy and have just a few pounds to go,” Moffitt said. “We are looking to come in and take it one match at a time while always looking for more to try and get bonus points where we can give ourselves a chance to be in the mix.”

Jaydale Whitlock, Chance Davis, Sam Libby and Umair Ahmad were runners-up while Matt Roche and Gary Walker III both finished in the Top-4.

Cooper, King and Grimm all earned a No. 4 seed while Davis is the fifth. Whitlock is seventh, Libby eighth and Ahmad 12.
