Madrid up next for Gaels

DES MOINES — The Class 1A field saw nothing but chalk through the quarterfinals, as all four top seeds advanced to Thursday night.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck knocked off defending champion North Linn and will now face No. 1 Bellevue Marquette at 5:15 p.m. here inside Wells Fargo Arena while St. Edmond gets unbeaten Madrid in the late game at 7 p.m.

The Gaels will be seeking a sixth appearance in the title round, as they won it all in 2000 and have finished second four other times. The last was in 2012 when they secured silver in 2A.

Jakob Koopman scored a game-high 18 with Carson Bargfrede adding 16 and Hunter Horn finishing with nine and 12 rebounds as St. Edmond knocked off Woodbine, 52-49. The Gaels used an 18-10 run in the fourth to survive and advance.

With the win, the Gaels now have 19 wins at the state tournament, which is the fifth-most among teams who qualified this year. They are at state for the 14th time overall, as head coach Adolph Kochendorfer now owns 594 career wins.

Madrid received a 30-point effort from star Toryn Severson in knocking off Boyden-Hull, 68-57. The Tigers also saw Jevyn Sorenson and Brody Buck score 14, with Buck and Fabian Ortiz-Alaniz knocking down key 3-pointers to spark a second half surge.

This is just the second appearance at state for Madrid, who also advanced in 2013. The Tigers scored over 100 points three times this year including 119 in a win over Melcher-Dallas.

Madrid head coach Brian Surratt is 98-24 in five years on the sidelines.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck is the only other 1A team left with a state title, as they won it all in 2015. This is the sixth trip to state for the Rebels, who have qualified each of the past three seasons.

Bellevue Marquette is at state for the 10th time, having also advanced last year to the elite eight.

Starting at $2.99/week.
