MNW senior Richman impressive in early going

Distance standout dominates Class 2A field in indoor 3,000

AMES — Friday’s IATC Indoor Championships showed just how much Alyssa Richman has grown as an athlete over the past year.

Richman, the standout Manson Northwest Webster distance runner, kicked off her senior track season by winning the Class 2A indoor championships in the 3,000 with a dominant performance.

After placing third in the same event a season ago, Richman went 10:13.56 to not only best rival Noelle Steines of Tipton by over 23 seconds, but punch a ticket to the upcoming Drake Relays in the event later this spring.

“The race felt amazing,” Richman said. “Going in, my coach and I decided to head into the 3K with fresh legs. Once again, 2A has an incredible field for 2025. I’ve gotten to known Noelle and McKenna Montgomery (of Albia) this winter and they are both super-fierce competitors.

“They put together a gritty race in the 3K after a busy morning.”

The time, which ranks fourth-fastest in the state of Iowa this year, saw Richman drop 36 seconds off her time from a year ago in this event.

“Getting the win, setting a PR and hitting the Drake Blue Standard makes me incredibly thankful,” Richman said. “I’ve had some pretty awesome people in my corner these past few months and I’m so grateful for the support.

“At the end of the day, though, I recognize that it’s still March. This means that there’s still work to be done and fun to be had.”

Richman’s teammate, Kyla Egli, was fifth in the 60 hurdles.

Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany joined Richman atop the podium, as she captured the 1A high jump by clearing 5-foot-6. Schany was also seventh in the long jump.

West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach had a busy day, as she was third in both the 1,500 and 3,000 in 1A while adding a sixth in the 800. Allie Fehr secured third in the high jump and was ninth in the 400 while Maddie Fehr was fourth in the 60.

Schupbach, Fehr, Fehr and Lilly Morey were sixth in the 4×800 for the Wolverines.

Tristin Gorden of South Central Calhoun placed third in the 2A shot put as teammate Iris Melody was eighth in the 3,000. Eagle Grove’s Addyson Jeske finished ninth in the 2A long jump.
