The Miles Community College baseball team came to Fort Dodge on Monday riding a 10-game win streak.
Iowa Central decided it wasn’t going to be an overly forgiving host.
The 22nd-ranked Tritons blitzed the Pioneers twice, winning 8-1 and 17-0 at Rogers Park.
“We played pretty well,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “We did a much better job of taking advantage of the free bases and extra outs they gave us, which hasn’t been a point of consistency for us (before now). That was good to see.
“They gave us some opportunities, and we created big innings. We took the momentum and ran with it.”
Sawyer Stein hit two home runs in the opener. Three Triton pitchers combined on a two-hitter, with starter Ryan Ohm earning the victory. The Iowa Central hurlers struck out nine in the seven-inning tilt.
The nightcap was more of the same and then some. Stein went deep again and drove in three, while Cooper Nicholson was 3-for-3 with two homers, four runs scored and six RBI.
Chayton Fischer also cleared the fence and drove in six.
“We’re making progress, but we’re still a long way from where we need to be,” Stein said of his 14-4 ballclub. “We had a ton of new faces this year…we basically returned only two everyday (position players).
“We’ve had some growing pains at times. We’re headed in the right direction, though. It was great to see Sawyer have a big day offensively, and Cooper’s getting going. Being a second-year kid who was the (2024) regional player of the year and an All-American, (Nicholson) has had to face things a little differently in terms of the pressure to perform and how (opposing teams) approached him. But he’s so talented…he’s getting there.”
Carter Giesen, Justin Benjamin Jr., Tyler Suttner and Jordan La Tour worked five innings without allowing a run for Iowa Central. Miles (17-7) managed just one hit.
“Our guys threw the ball well overall,” Stein said. “We chopped things up (with the rotation) and used our balance and depth, which was nice.
“As long as we’re avoiding freebies and not creating opportunities to give up unnecessary runs, we’ll be OK.”
The Tritons face the Pioneers again on Tuesday at Rogers Park in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Iowa Central’s 2025 ICCAC opener against Iowa Lakes is scheduled for Thursday at home, weather permitting, with first pitch at 2:30 p.m.
