EAGLE GROVE — Anthony Valles had a big night for the St. Edmond boys track team here Tuesday at the Umstead Relays hosted by Eagle Grove.

Valles won the 800, placed second in the 1,600, was third in the 400 and ran on the winning 4×400-meter relay for the Gaels, who placed fifth overall in Class B.

The junior went 2:11.71 in his gold performance in the 800 while Levi Odor-Westrum, Grant Galles and Aaron Hindt helped put together a time of 3:42.30 in the 4×400.

“It was a really great night for Anthony,” SEHS head coach Donn Larson said. “We ask a lot out of Anthony, Grant and Aaron because we only have 15 boys running right now. But I thought overall, everybody really ran well.”

Matt Condon of Manson Northwest Webster dominated, as the senior collected four first place finishes. Condon won the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, high jump and long jump to lead the Cougars.

In Class A, Algona, Humboldt and Webster City won all but the two throwing events, led by seven titles for the Bulldogs.

Gavin Weber earned gold in both the 800 and 1,600. Teammate Brooks Morgan claimed the 3,200.

Algona also was first in the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400 and distance medley relays.

For Humboldt, Chase Flaherty won the 400, as did Mason Van Pelt in the 400 hurdles, Elliot Carlson in the long jump and Tyler Carlson in the high jump. The Wildcats added wins in the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays.

Webster City’s Jayden Weinzetl swept the sprint events, placing first in the 100 and 200. Jaxon Griffith captured the 110 hurdles, and the Lynx won the 4×800 relay.

The sprint medley relay for St. Edmond — Kinnick Henning, Evan Christiansen, Galles and Hindt — placed second. Two other relays added thirds in the 4×200 and 4×800.

Liam Shannon scored bronze in both the 1,600 and 3,200. Hindt added a third in the long jump.

“Liam did a nice job in both of his races,” Larson said. “We could have used Aaron in a few other individual events, but we opted to stack our relays and see how they would run instead.”

The 4×200 consisted of Galles, Odor-Westrum, Thomas Ehn and Hindt while the 4×800 was Odor-Westrum, Matthew Crimmins, Erik Larson and Aidan Reel.

“We have a lot of young kids who are still learning what they can do,” Larson said. “I was really surprised with how well the 4×800 ran, as that was the first time they have been together.”

Galles took fourth in the 200.

Along with Condon, Mason Anderson was second in the shot put. Hendrik Puuraid earned silver in the discus for MNW.

St. Edmond runs on Thursday in Clarion.
