Dodger girls snap losing skid

DES MOINES — There was a sigh of relief on the Fort Dodge girls soccer sidelines on Tuesday night.

The Dodger girls (1-5 overall) ended a 19-game losing streak, blanking Des Moines North (3-6), 1-0.

“We are pumped,” said Fort Dodge head coach G Myers. “That was awesome to get the sweep on their senior night.”

Junior Abby Hernandez recorded her second goal of the season. Hernandez hit the back of the night on a penalty kick in the first half.

“After not feeling well (Monday) and still not the greatest (Tuesday), she fought through it,” Myers said. “She is showing good leadership and stepping into that role. She is studying the field and what she is looking for and keeping the game going. Jase (Madison) battled in the box, and then Abby was ready.”

The Dodgers recorded their first shutout since May of 2023 when they beat Waterloo East, 9-0.

“I think just coming into this game alone we had been doing great things,” said Myers. “We played full games all the way so far against good quality teams. This gives them the confidence that we can get it done.

“Everyone has the hunger and we are putting the pieces together. We just need to find the chemistry in the midfield and win the ball and put the pressure on.”

Sophomore Maleah Landfair had a clean sheet on the night.

“Maleah continues to amaze me and is getting more confident and coming out and getting the ball,” Myers said. “I’m super proud of Evie (Heldorfer). She is a true team player and does what ever for the team, whether it’s play defense or offense.

“That speaks volumes of her character.”

The junior varsity picked up its second win of the season, with a 2-0 victory. Zoey Balm and Elvia Ramos recorded goals.

The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they host Marshalltown. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
