The Fort Dodge boys track and field squad finished a busy stretch with a strong performance at the 66th annual Dodger Relays on Monday at J.H. Nitzke Track.
Head coach Nik Moser’s squad had eight Top-3 finishes in the meet, with five runner-up showings to flank a gold medal performance.
Fort Dodge was competing for the third time in five days. They were in action on the Blue Oval inside Drake Stadium for the Jim Duncan Invitational on Saturday, coming off a meet in Marshalltown on Thursday.
Fort Dodge placed fourth on Monday as a team, scoring 105 points. Waukee Northwest was the team champion with 167 points. Humboldt (139) was second, followed by Mason City (108).
“That 105 is the most points we’ve scored at the Dodger Relays in a long time,” said Moser. “Our guys have run a lot recently, but we had a really solid night overall.”
Fort Dodge had four silver showings in relay events.
“We had some really good times in our relays especially,” Moser said. “The 4×800 is getting better, the sprint med ran well and the 4×200 was a second better.
“Our 4×1 finished strong, too.”
Junior Noah Daniel continued his hot start to the season, claiming first in the 100-meter dash with his best time of the season. Daniel (11.14) finished ahead of Mason City’s Drayden Witt (11.30).
Dodger teammate Rylan Kingrey (11.53) was third in the 100.
Daniel was also second in the 200-meter dash (23.37), finishing behind only St. Edmond’s Aaron Hindt (22.95).
Daniel was also part of Fort Dodge’s runner-up showing in both the 4×200 and the 4×100 relays.
The quartet of Kingrey, sophomore Sam Moser, junior Tytrell Mosley and Daniel finished the 4×2 in 1:34.61. Humboldt was the event winner in a time of 1:33.86.
In the 4×1, the Dodgers used Kingrey, sophomore Tru McBride, Mosley and Daniel (45.12). Humboldt claimed the event with a time of 44.34.
The sprint medley finished in the silver spot, crossing the line in 1:41.93 just behind winner Waukee Northwest at 1:41.16.
The Fort Dodge underclass quartet of sophomore Jayce Point, sophomore Cael Hansen, freshman Avery Bryhne and freshman Joseph Petersen had a time of 8:42.70 for second. Waukee Northwest crossed the line in 8:41.28 for the win.
It was a family event in the 4×400, as sophomore Sam Moser completed the second leg of the Sam Moser 4×400 relay — an event named after his grandfather and long-time Dodger track coach.
The quartet of Hunter Richardson, Moser, freshman Luke Beckley and Point finished in 3:45.16. St. Edmond won the event in 3:37.05.
Point was fourth in the 800 in a time 2:09.01. Kingrey was also fourth in the 200 (23.80).
Junior Dalton Eckley (5-8) was fourth in the high jump, while sophomore Joe Constable (125-04) was sixth in the discus.
“This whole event goes very smoothly,” Moser said. “Brandon (Ruffridge, Fort Dodge’s athletic and activities director) did a tremendous job. Josh and Michael Smith are right on top of things with the timing and results. Jared West and Kevin McCormack work hard to get the Stadium ready. My dad and (fellow former FDSH boys track coach) John (McBride) put in a lot of time with me over the weekend in preparation for this.
“There are so many volunteers and workers who are truly the ones who make this happen for the teams and the kids.”
Fort Dodge is back in action on Thursday at Cedar Falls.
