The Iowa Central golf teams took advantage of relatively ideal conditions here Friday to begin their two-day invitational.
On the men’s side, the Tritons sit in second place overall behind Southeast, who fired a 1-over for the round. Iowa Central is also second in the women’s team standings, as Briar Cliff holds the overnight lead heading into the final 18 holes at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Saturday.
“Really proud of the way we played,” ICCC head coach Kris Graewin said. “We were able to convert on a lot of our looks early. We had some hiccups in the middle of our men’s round and the ladies didn’t finish like they would have liked, but we gave ourselves a chance to bring home some hardware on Saturday and that’s all you can ask for.”
Filip Jarheden recorded three birdies for his round to lead the way for the Tritons, as he stands in third place with a 1-under. Ben Christy is 10th, Colby Ramsdale is 15th, Eric Zuniga is 21st and Peyton Walker is 24th.
Christy, who fired a 2-over, carded a birdie and was able to overcome a triple-bogey with 15 pars. Walker had two birdies on the day with Ramsdale and Zuniga each recording one.
Bailey Doe, competing on a second Iowa Central team, is tied for the individual lead with Mads Svendsen of Southeast. Both Doe and Svendsen shot rounds of 2-under 69, as Doe carded four birdies on the front-nine and one on the back.
Svensden had a different round, including an early on No. 7 at the FDCC, a par-5, 552-yard hole to go along with two birdies.
Alexandra is third, Briar Cliff fourth, Wartburg fifth and a second Iowa Central team sits in seventh overall. Along with Doe, Tucker Smith is 24th, Hunter Ramirez is 35th, former Webster City golfer Braylon Plain is 51st, Ethan Kuper is 54th and Aden Staples is 59th.
Smith had a pair of birdies and Plain recorded one.
Ivanna Becerra-Diaz shot a 4-over 75 and is second overall to lead the Iowa Central women, who are eight strokes behind Briar Cliff. Becerra-Diaz had one birdie with 13 pars for her round of play.
“Really happy for the rounds Bailey, Filip and Ivanna played,” Graewin said. “I am looking forward to them competing for the individual medalists on Saturday.”
Jenna Kramer and Olivia Eckert are tied for sixth, with Brooklynn Backoff in 15th. Eckert had two birdies on the back nine; Backoff recorded one.
Briar Cliff is led by Helene Getz Bergmo, who shot a 3-over and is one shot ahead of Becerra-Diaz.
Simpson is third followed by NIACC, Iowa Lakes and Peru State.
The action tees off Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
