Mustangs earn gold

MANSON — The Newell-Fonda girls track and field team used a collective effort to secure the overall trophy here Thursday night at the Emily Markert Relays.
The Mustangs won three relays and had eight other second or third place finishes to score 101 points. Host Manson Northwest Webster was second followed by Alta-Aurelia, South Hamilton, Cherokee, MVAOCOU, Pocahontas Area, West Bend-Mallard, Southeast Valley, East Sac County and Eagle Grove.
Newell-Fonda picked up gold in the sprint medley relay (1:57.34), the distance medley relay (4:42.58) and the meeting-ending 4×400 relay (4;16.51). Lindsey Wolf was second in the high jump, as Ava Vie was the 400 hurdles runner-up and placed third in the 100 hurdles.
The Mustangs were also second in the 4×200 relay with Danika Meyer (3,000), Kinzee Hinders (200), Rylee Hogrefe (400 hurdles) and Mareni Brabec (1,500) all adding third place medals.
Elissa Anderson, Kyla Egli and Alyssa Richman all won titles for the Cougars. Anderson claimed first in the discus with a throw of 104-1, Egli won the 100 hurdles in 16.21 and Richman the 1,500 in 4:58.38.
Ava Moline was second in the discus to Anderson and third overall in the shot put, Egli finished third in the long jump and the MNW shuttle hurdle relay claimed bronze.
West Bend-Mallard’s Maddie Fehr won the 100 in 12.62 and was second in the 200. Tyra Schupbach finished second in both the 1,500 and 3,000, with Allie Fehr (high jump) and the 4×100 both taking third.
Pocahontas Area’s Halee Hauswirth won the shot put (38-2.5) with Amanda Davis (100) and the 4×100 both placing second. The shuttle hurdle and 4×200 relays were third for the Indians.
East Sac County won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:13.50 and had Miranda Gerdes take third in the discus.
For Eagle Grove, Addyson Jeske was the long jump runner-up while Camryn Lane of Southeast Valley finished third in the 400.
The relay are named in honor of Manson Northwest Webster graduate Emily Markert, who passed away in 2014 at 32 years old. She underwent a lung transplant in 1999 and again in 2006.
