No. 14 Tritons sweep NIACC in baseball

The 14th-ranked Iowa Central baseball team won its 11th straight game on Sunday, finishing a weekend sweep of NIACC.

The Tritons (33-6 overall, 17-2 Region XI) held on for a wild 13-12 win at Rogers Park to end the series after taking down the Trojans (14-25, 7-13) twice on Saturday by scores of 13-3 and 3-2.

The series finale was a wild one. Iowa Central exploded for eight runs in the seventh to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 13-6 lead, but NIACC answered right back with six runs in the top of the eighth before the Tritons closed the door.

Sawyer Stein homered and had two hits in the Sunday victory. Colin Richie and Luke Bohonek scored twice each.

Braxton Shaffer struck out 10 Trojans in five innings of work.

In the 13-3 win on Saturday, the Tritons pounded out 13 hits. Jake Busson had three hits. Cooper Nicholson, Cade Sears, Stein and Isaiah Scott had two each.

Busson drove in four, while Isaiah Scott and Manson Northwest Webster graduate Lane Moline added two RBI each.

Busson, Nicholson and Spencer Pederson recorded doubles in the rout.

Carter Giesen earned the win in game one Saturday, going five innings and giving up four hits with seven strikeouts. Three Tritons pitchers combined for 11 Ks.

Iowa Central stole 14 bases. Sears (four), Isaiah Scott (three) and Nicholson (two) led the way.

A three-run fourth inning led the Tritons to the 3-2 victory on Saturday. Busson had the team’s only hit, a double. Scott also drove in a run.

Ryan Ohm went five innings of the series opener and allowed four hits for the victory. He allowed one earned run, walking three and striking out four.

The Tritons are back in action on Tuesday when they host Northeast at Rogers Park for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
