BACK ON THE TRACK
FDMX to hold its first spring race

Fort Dodge graduate deegan hepp will ride at the FDMX Spring Race at Sports Park Raceway this weekend.
The dream came true.
Now, Justin Wallace and Zach Wallace are where they want to be.
The FDMX group built a state of the art track last year, and held a three-day Iowa Moto Series event at Sports Park Raceway last August.
This weekend, the brothers will hold the first of two planned events in 2025. It starts with the FDMX Spring Race — the first of its kind locally.
“It was great to get over the first hump (last year) and keep it going,” Justin said. “We have it locked in and we’re able to continue from where we started the build.”
Last year, with plenty of local help, the brothers spent some of spring and most of the summer in 2024 cutting down trees and constructing a track worthy of being part of the Iowa Moto Championships.
“This is our first event where we don’t have to build something (from scratch) prior to the event,” Justin said. “It’s given us time to create a structure event with banners and cool signs.”
Racing will begin on Friday at 3 p.m. with a stacyc/strider bike race for kids three to seven years old. After the bike race, there will be an Easter egg hunt, sponsored by Gypsum Hollow Servies.
The gates will open on Thursday for out-of-town racers.
“It makes it a lot easier to have the track already built,” Zach said. “We started last weekend with one of our sponsors, Landon Rasch, working on something.
“We threw out some bales of hay and put some water down.”
Cost for the whole weekend is $20. The cost for the Easter egg hunt along with a Saturday pass will be $15. Camping is free.
Saturday’s action will begin with practices at 8 a.m. and races to follow at 9:30 p.m.
The spring race is one of two planned events by the FDMX, with the other slated for Aug. 23 and Aug. 24.
“It’s great to be able to have this race and the riders can see the track and want to come back,” Zach said. “It’s a lot easier to get use to it and know what to expect.”
Local professional riders Deegan Hepp, Colin Hinrichs and Brennan Myers will be in attendance. Also riding will be schoolboy 12/17 champion Zaine Randall and 50 cc 4/6 champion Challen McKinney.
The brothers, along with Wendy Wallace and Tiffany Wallace, have put in the extra legwork to help make the event possible.
RJ PowerSports, Storm Lake Honda and Mid-Country Machinery have also been assiting for the event set-up. Wallace also wanted to thank Sports Park Raceway owner Jeff Frevert.
“I’d like to thank my wife and our sponsors and everyone that made this happen,” Zach said. “This is a big undertaking.”
