Sievers named player of the year

SIOUX CENTER — Macy Sievers scored plenty of honors and awards during time at Newell-Fonda. That hasn’t changed now that she is at Dordt University.
For the second straight season, Sievers was tabbed first team NAIA All-American after helping lead the Defenders to a second national championship.
There was even more for Sievers in terms of hardware, though.
The junior was named the player of the year in women’s basketball, becoming the first in program history to earn the honor.
“It’s honestly pretty crazy to think about receiving this award,” Sievers said. “I couldn’t do it without my awesome teammates, who push me everyday in practice, and having coaches who challenge me but also support me in every way.
“This honor is super cool but it represents all of the time others have put into me to allow me to be the player I am today.”
Sievers, a 5-foot-8 point guard, was named the MVP of the championship game for a second straight year after posting 25 points, 12 assists, 11 rebounds and four steals as Dordt topped Indiana Wesleyan, 82-73 last Tuesday night.
She averaged 15.6 points, 7.8 assists and 7.6 rebounds during the season while finishing the six-game NAIA championships with 16.7 points, 9.1 assists, 7.7 rebounds and two triple-doubles.
“I am very honored to receive this award as there are so many great athletes in NAIA,” Sievers said. “But this award is so small compared to the award we received as a team last week in becoming national champs.”
Sievers was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference player of the year, first-team all-conference and to the national championship all-tournament team. She currently is the Dordt career leader in assists (732), is second in steals (279), seventh in points (1,315), ninth in made 3-pointers (124) and 13th in rebounds (694).
The Defenders finished the season 35-2 overall and are 100-8 over the past three years with two national titles and a runner-up trophy. The Dordt roster features 12 former Iowa high school prep standouts on it.
