DES MOINES — For the second straight year, Mariah Myers placed her name among the top throwers in the state.

The St. Edmond senior secured an eighth-place finish here Thursday in the discus at the 115th Drake Relays. Myers, a University of Iowa softball commit, placed seventh in the event a season ago.

Ottumwa’s Delilah Subsin unseated Charlee Morton of Hampton-Dumont/CAL for top honors with a throw of 156-9. Morton won both the shot put and discus at America’s Athletic Classic a season ago.

Myers, who will throw Friday morning inside Drake Stadium in the shot put, had her best attempt on her first throw. She hit a mark of 131-6, which pushed her to the No. 1 spot at that time.

From there, Myers had a throw of 128-10 on her second attempt before recording scratches on her final four throws.

“So proud of Mariah,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “To be able to qualify and finish in the Top-8 at Drake two years in a row is an amazing accomplishment.

“I’m excited to see how she finishes the year out and what she can do when she gets back down here at the end of May.”

Myers was the third thrower of the second flight, following Waukee Northwest’s Sophia Schlader and Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines Valley. Like Myers, Schlader and Mohler are also softball standouts.

“Coach (Cory) Naughton has put in a lot of time and effort working with Mariah these past couple of years,” Tracy said. “A huge thanks goes out to him for all his insight and effort.”

Along with Myers, Anna Lursen will run in the 400-meter dash on Friday and the 400-meter hurdles here on Saturday for the Gaels.

Manson Northwest Webster senior Alyssa Richman secured herself a Top-8 finish by placing seventh in the 3,000-meter run. Richman, who has had a strong start to the year in the 1,500 and 3,000, clocked a time of 10:00.09, breaking her own previous school record by over 13 seconds.

“I’m extremely satisfied with how I executed my race,” Richman said. “Throughout, I remained consistent and still had some fight left in my legs at the end. It wasn’t enough to bring home hardware (the Top-6 medal), but it’s hard to ask for more than what the day brought. The weather, atmosphere and competition was all there; I knew it was going to make for a great race. This race meant so much, and it gave me a large amount of confidence heading into the last part of the season.

“The support from the community has also meant so much. Not only that, but it was awesome that Matt Condon was able to represent MNW in both the high jump and long jump as well. It was a great day for Cougar track and field.”

The state veteran was 14th at the 1,400-meter mark before making a climb and racing past several opponents. Charlee Gall of Cedar Falls was the race winner in 9;44.19.

Condon, also a senior for Manson Northwest Webster, participated in a pair of events. Condon, who broke the school record earlier this week in the high jump, tied for 12th by clearing 6-foot-4.

In the long jump, Condon had a leap of 20-4.5 to place 18th overall.

Humboldt’s Tyler Carlson tied for ninth in the high jump, as the senior cleared 6-4. His teammate, Elliot Carlson, was 20th in the long jump with a leap of 20-2.5.

Algona’s Max Nevitt finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 54-10. He also had a toss of 54-4.75 during the event, which was won by Landon Prince of Clear Creek-Amana at 61-10.75.

Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany, a defending state champion, placed seventh in the long jump with a leap fo 17-5. Reese Brownlee from Clear Lake knocked off Abby Mecklenburg of Linn-Mar by going 18-10.

Earlier this year, Mecklenburg became the first Iowa girl to surpass 20 feet in the long jump.

Iowa Central had five events on the track, as the men’s 4×800-meter relay of Saad Rifi Loutfi, Yasser Soualah, Alexis Ortiz and Taha Ouchene had the best finish. The quartet placed second in a time of 7:32.82, as Cornerstone (Mich.) was first in 7:31.29.

Soufyane Laaziz placed fourth in the men’s 1,500 UD/CD division, winning his heat. Creighton’s Jake Ziebarth was the race winner.

The Triton women’s 4×800-meter relay team placed 10th in 9:31.09. Said Rifi Loutfi was 12th in the men’s 800 UD/CD.

Starting at $2.99/week.
