DES MOINES — Mariah Myers reached another Drake Relays final here on Friday, securing her third Top-10 finish at America’s Athletic Classic.

The St. Edmond senior and future University of Iowa softball player placed ninth in the shot put inside Drake Stadium. On Thursday, Myers was eighth in the discus, a year after placing seventh in that event.

North Central Conference rival Charlee Morton of Hampton-Dumont/CAL made history by winning her third consecutive Drake title in the event with a throw of 46-9.25. She is just the second athlete ever to secure a three-peat at Drake in shot put.

“That was a great meet for every girl thrower,” Myers said. “It was fun being in such a competitive atmosphere and that definitely pushed me.

“This meet will hopefully prepare me for state because I could get to throw against the best throwers again but just in 1A.”

Anna Lursen placed eighth in the 400-meter run in her first of two Drake appearances. The Gael junior clocked a time of 57.44 and will run in the 400 hurdles on Saturday at 1:59 p.m. on the Blue Oval.

Myers unloaded her best throw of the meet on her second attempt, hitting 40-9.5. She also had throws of 39-10.75 and 37-4.5 on her first and fourth attempts.

“It was a good day for these girls,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “Both of them did a great job and showed they belonged at the Drake Relays. It was a great feat for Mariah to finish in the Top-8 in both of her events. She has grown a ton in the shot put and discus over the past couple of seasons.

“Anna showed a lot with her run. While it wasn’t a PR, she ran extremely well against very tough competition. We are excited to see what she can do Saturday.”

Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany, the a defending state champion in the high jump, placed second overall. A junior, Schany cleared 5-6, as did Ema Roberts of HLV.
