Tritons earn national berth

ANKENY — For the first time under Kris Graewin, the Iowa Central women’s golf team has qualified for nationals.

The Tritons placed second here Tuesday at Otter Creek Golf Course during the North Plains District Regional. Ivanna Becerra-Diaz led the way for Iowa Central, as she was medalist by seven shots.

Olivia Eckert placed fifth and Jenna Kramer 10th to give the Tritons three individuals in the Top-10.

Des Moines Area won the team title to join Iowa Central at the upcoming NJCAA Div. II National Tournament, which will be held May 12-15 in Boone.

“I am thrilled to be taking my first ladies team to nationals,” Graewin said. “We’ve worked really hard over the last two years to get to this point, and I’m so proud of our ladies.”

Becerra-Diaz carded two birdies, including one on the 18th hole. She also had nine pars, with four coming to close out the front-nine holes.

“Ivanna showed over the last two days she is one of our best players in the country,” Graewin said. “She’s been an absolute joy to coach.

“I fully expect us to compete for a national title as a team and Ivanna as an individual.”

Iowa Central was tied with DMACC after the opening day, and while the Bears pulled away in round two, the Tritons finished 18 strokes ahead of third place North Iowa Area. Iowa Lakes and Hawkeye rounded out the standings.

Eckert finished her round with one birdie and nine pars, as she also recorded a birdie on the closing 18th. Kramer had a birdie on No. 9 to go along with two pars while Brooklynn Backoff, who placed 13th overall, five pars.

Becerra-Diaz held the overnight lead and remained atop the scoreboard, finishing seven shots ahead of runner-up Halle Hagberg of DMACC.

The national tournament will be played at Cedar Pointe Golf Course, marking the first-ever one at the NJCAA Div. II level.
